Did Chip and Joanna Gaines Face a Government Lawsuit? The Cases Are Different

The recent AndDone court order concerns Shante Gaines and a private payment-processing dispute—not Chip and Joanna Gaines or a government lawsuit.

No: the federal court order behind the recent “massive lawsuit” claim names Shante Gaines, not Chip or Joanna Gaines. It concerns a private payment-processing contract dispute, not a government action. The couple have been associated with a separate, older EPA settlement over lead-paint handling during renovations, but that is a different matter.

Who was sued in the recent court case?

The order in AndDone, LLC v. Gaines identifies Shante Gaines as the individual defendant. It does not name Chip Gaines or Joanna Gaines. The plaintiff, AndDone, alleged a dispute arising from a Sub-Merchant Agreement for payment-processing services. This was a civil contract case, not a lawsuit brought by the government. Read the court order in AndDone, LLC v. Gaines.

What did the court decide?

The court granted AndDone default judgment on its primary breach-of-contract claim after finding that Shante Gaines failed to provide complete discovery responses and did not appear for her deposition despite three court orders. The order called that failure “clearly willful” and found AndDone had been prejudiced.

According to the order’s account of the pleaded facts, $88,506 in funds moved through the payment portal was reported as unauthorized and charged back to AndDone after Gaines’s account lacked sufficient funds. The court awarded AndDone $88,506 in chargebacks and $6,200 in attorney fees under Rule 37. These are civil judgment amounts; the order does not describe a criminal finding.

The court denied as moot default-judgment requests on alternative claims against Gaines and against Reset Financial Group, LLC. It said the available record was insufficient to find that Reset Financial Group was a party to the agreement.

Did Chip and Joanna Gaines face a government lawsuit?

The current AndDone order does not establish that. It names a different person and describes a private contract dispute. The separate EPA matter is described by a secondary source as a 2017 settlement concerning lead-paint handling, not as the AndDone lawsuit. The available sources do not establish that no other unrelated case involving the couple exists.
