Empty the planter, remove loose soil and plant debris, wash it with soapy water, and rinse. Disinfect only when a serious plant disease such as wilt or root rot affected the previous plants; a clean container does not automatically mean you need to discard its potting mix.
Clean the planter before deciding whether to disinfect it
- Empty it. Remove spent plants, roots, leaves, and other debris. Brush or wipe loose soil from the inside, outside, corners, and crevices. As University of Minnesota Extension explains, “Dirt and debris left on tools will interfere with the disinfection process and reduce its effectiveness, so remove all visible soil and plant debris.”
- Wash. Scrub with soapy water using a brush or rag; dish detergent is suitable for this wash, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. A stiff brush can help with rough surfaces.
- Rinse. Rinse away soap and remaining loosened soil. If the previous plants showed no concerning disease, this routine wash is generally a reasonable stopping point.
When should you disinfect a window box?
Consider disinfection if the previous plants died from a serious disease such as wilt or root rot. A March 11, 2026 University of Maryland Extension Ask Extension response says empty pots generally need only cursory cleaning and suggests sterilization when the previous plant died from wilt or root rot. Disinfectant is not a substitute for cleaning: remove visible soil and debris first, or it may work less effectively.
Bleach soak
Iowa State Extension’s container procedure is to soak the cleaned planter in a solution of one part household bleach to nine parts water for at least 10 minutes. Add bleach to water to reduce splashing, protect skin and clothing, and use the prepared mixture within two hours. Rinse the planter afterward.
Work with ventilation and protective equipment as directed by the product label. University of Minnesota Extension warns that disinfectants can produce harmful fumes or burn skin: read and follow the label, and never mix disinfectants with other chemicals.

Alcohol for a single container
If soaking is impractical, Iowa State Extension describes wiping all surfaces inside and out with undiluted 70% isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol is flammable, so keep it away from flames and other ignition sources. Household surface cleaners are not established substitutes; Iowa State says their effectiveness against plant pathogens on containers has not been well evaluated.
Adjust the cleanup to the planter material
- Plastic or glazed ceramic: These nonporous surfaces are comparatively easy to clean. For mineral deposits, Iowa State Extension suggests a scouring pad.
- Clay or terracotta: These porous materials may retain residue. Iowa State suggests steel wool or a wire-bristle brush for mineral deposits. Rinse clay thoroughly, then keep it soaking until you are ready to plant; dry clay can draw moisture from fresh potting medium.
- Wood: Minnesota Extension recommends warm soapy water, drying the planter, and applying oil or wood preservative.
Does cleaning mean you must replace the potting mix?
No. Cleaning the container and replacing its growing medium are separate decisions, and extension recommendations differ. A March 11, 2026 University of Maryland Extension response said replacement was not needed in the powdery-mildew situation it addressed; it suggested that older mix could be refreshed with an equal amount of new material to improve drainage, or fully replaced. By contrast, a May 10, 2023 Hennepin County Extension Master Gardener Ask Extension response recommended annual replacement to replenish nutrients and eliminate disease, specifically advising new mix for tomatoes.

Use the previous crop’s health and the next crop to guide the choice, remove visibly diseased plant material, and consult local extension guidance when disease is a concern. Disinfecting the planter does not guarantee disease-free plants: Maryland notes that spores can later arrive on wind or in splashing rain or irrigation water.
