The City of Stirling later reported that geothermal maintenance was completed and the system returned to service in July 2025. The available records do not establish how much gas, if any, the pool has used since that return.
What happened to the pool’s geothermal heating?
Scarborough Beach Pool, an outdoor aquatic centre in Scarborough, Western Australia, opened in 2018 with geothermal heating. The system was intended to reduce reliance on conventional gas boilers, but maintenance problems later disrupted its operation.
In its 2023/24 annual report, the City of Stirling said significant maintenance affected the geothermal system and required a temporary switch to less sustainable heating methods. The City said the change increased emissions and operating costs. City of Stirling Annual Report 2023/24
PerthNow’s 10 April 2025 account said the system had been offline since May 2023 and the pool had relied on gas during that period. That is a dated news report of the outage, rather than confirmation of the pool’s heating mode today. PerthNow, 10 April 2025

When did geothermal heating return?
A City of Stirling council attachment dated 24 February 2026 says maintenance was completed and the geothermal system returned to service in July 2025. The City also linked higher estimated emissions for 2024/25 and continued gas use to the unexpected maintenance. That establishes a return to geothermal service in July 2025, but not that gas use ended altogether. The 2025 City material describes gas boilers as backup infrastructure for geothermal and heat-pump systems; the available records do not quantify whether those boilers have operated since geothermal heating returned.

The City’s facility listing describes the outdoor lap pool as heated year-round to 27°C and the leisure pool as currently 31°C. The City’s broader facilities information describes year-round geothermal heating. Those are visitor-facing descriptions and pool temperatures, not a breakdown of heat supplied by geothermal equipment versus gas backup.
