For a hollow plaster wall, a manufacturer-listed toggle bolt or strap toggle may be suitable—but the right choice depends on the wall construction and what you are hanging. Identify the wall, consider the fixture’s weight and leverage, then follow the selected anchor’s instructions for hole size, wall thickness, clearance and tightening. How do you hang something on a plaster wall? Start with those checks rather than assuming a generic drywall anchor will work.
Identify the wall and the load before choosing an anchor
“Plaster wall” does not identify one uniform construction. Before drilling, determine whether the wall is hollow and what substrate the anchor will bear against. Also consider the object’s weight, how it attaches, and whether it projects from the wall. A shelf, for example, creates leverage; a fastener’s capacity for an object held close to the wall cannot automatically be applied to one extending outward.
DEWALT lists its spring-wing toggle bolt and Strap-Toggle as suitable for plaster, among other materials. That is a product compatibility statement, not a capacity guarantee for every plaster wall. Compare anchor requirements, not just the names
Check the selected product’s instructions for the factors that determine whether it fits your wall and fixture:

- Substrate compatibility: Confirm the manufacturer lists the actual base material and wall construction.
- Bearing mechanism: A spring-wing toggle opens behind a hollow wall; other designs may support the load differently.
- Hole size and clearance: Use the product-specific drill-bit size and verify that the anchor can open in the cavity.
- Wall thickness: Confirm the anchor’s permitted thickness range for your wall.
- Fixture and future access: Consider whether you may need to remove or reinstall the fixture, and what happens to the anchor when you do.
- Load information: Read the product’s own rating and test conditions; do not assume ratings from different anchors or substrates are directly comparable.
DEWALT’s guide gives suggested drill-bit sizes by toggle size and material, with separate entries for wallboard, hollow concrete masonry and hollow-core concrete. It also lists required wing clearance, from 1-1/16 inches for the smallest listed size to 3 inches for the largest. Those figures are not a single drill-bit recommendation for plaster: select the bit and clearance for the exact anchor and installation.
Install a spring-wing toggle bolt as directed
The following sequence describes DEWALT’s spring-wing toggle bolt. Follow the instructions supplied with your chosen product if its design or procedure differs.

- Select the specified bit. Use the DEWALT chart entry for the particular toggle size and applicable material; do not substitute a generic plaster-wall hole size.
- Drill the opening through the base material, checking that the cavity has the clearance the anchor requires.
- Prepare the fixture. Pass the bolt through the fixture, then thread the spring wings onto the bolt.
- Fold the wings back and insert them through the opening until they pass the wall and spring open behind it.
- Pull back on the assembly while tightening. This keeps the wings from spinning as you turn the bolt.
- Tighten with a screwdriver until firmly tightened, following the product instructions.
Interpret load figures cautiously
Load figures belong to a particular product, test setup and substrate—not to plaster walls as a category. TOGGLER says that “Industry safety standards recommend 1/4 of that ultimate load as a reasonably safe working load for each installed anchor.” It also says it cannot guarantee that figure because it does not know the wall or installation, and that its ultimate holding value applies to objects held close to the wall. Treat this as TOGGLER’s manufacturer guidance, not a universal code requirement or a rating for every plaster wall. Its FAQ explains the qualification.
Do not treat an anchor’s stated capacity as permission to ignore the wall’s condition, installation quality, number and spacing of anchors, or the leverage imposed by the fixture. If the wall is damaged, its construction is uncertain, or failure could cause injury or significant damage, seek advice from a qualified installer rather than relying on a general rating.

Plan for removal in lath-and-plaster walls
For toggle bolts installed in lath and plaster, USG identifies a practical drawback: when the bolt is removed, the wing may fall into the hollow wall. That can make later reuse of the opening difficult. USG also describes a hollow-wall fastener whose expanded support spreads the load against the wall material, but its handbook does not establish one best fastener or a universal load rating for every lath type, plaster thickness or wall condition.
