China Railway Tunnel Group reported a successful system trial in November 2024, when excavation had passed 2,600 meters. The project then advanced through dated construction milestones: Xinhua reported that the machine completed its 11.325-kilometer underwater drive on July 30, 2026. That was a major breakthrough, not completion of the entire tunnel; the report scheduled full tunnel completion for the end of 2026.
What is the Chongtai Yangtze River Tunnel?
The tunnel is part of the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu high-speed railway, connecting Shanghai’s Chongming District with Taicang in Jiangsu, according to the project contractor, China Railway Tunnel Group. The contractor’s 2024 announcement gave the railway’s design speed as 350 km/h. That is a design specification, not a report of trains operating at that speed.
The 2024 project figures describe a 14.25 km total tunnel, including a 13.20 km shield-bored section, excavated by a shield machine with a 15.4 m diameter. Those dimensions and the design speed were reported by the contractor, rather than independently verified in a performance test. China Railway Tunnel Group’s November 2024 announcement
What did the 2024 intelligent-shield trial establish?
On November 22, 2024, China Railway Tunnel Group announced that its intelligent construction V2.0 system had been integrated with the Pioneer shield machine and described the trial as successful. The contractor said more than 2,000 meters of excavation had taken place before integration and that the machine had excavated more than 2,600 meters by the time of the announcement. These are reported project progress figures; they do not by themselves quantify how much the system improved productivity or quality.

The contractor’s account describes a coordinated construction system, not simply a machine operating without people. Its nine named areas span the work from planning and production to excavation and oversight:
- Intelligent perception
- Intelligent design
- Intelligent prefabrication
- Intelligent tunneling
- Intelligent installation
- Intelligent construction
- Intelligent environmental control
- Intelligent transport
- Intelligent management and control
In practical terms, the system’s stated scope includes sensing site and machine conditions, coordinating tunnel construction tasks, and managing supporting activities such as segment prefabrication, installation, environmental control, and transport. The contractor describes benefits to efficiency and quality qualitatively; the cited project account does not give a measured percentage improvement or a controlled comparison. Does “unmanned tunneling” mean no workers are present?
No. In a 2025 report hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Government, China Daily quoted Wang Yi, the project’s deputy equipment manager: “This project became the world’s first to achieve unmanned tunneling operations, with staff required only to be on duty.” The wording is Wang’s reported claim, not an independently verified ranking of global tunnel projects. “Unmanned” here should not be read as proof that the entire construction site ran without personnel: the quotation itself refers to staff being on duty.
The same report describes an AI system integrating functions including perception, tunneling, prefabrication, installation, detection, and management, and says it can make and execute operating decisions automatically. That account supports a description of automated decision-making within an integrated system; it does not establish that every operation was autonomous or that people were absent from the project. How has construction progressed since the trial?
The reported milestones track the machine’s progress through the underwater drive. Each is a dated construction update, not evidence that the railway had opened to service.
| Date | Reported milestone | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| November 22, 2024 | Intelligent construction V2.0 integrated with the Pioneer shield machine; more than 2,600 m excavated at announcement time. | China Railway Tunnel Group described the trial as successful. |
| March 16, 2025; reported March 18 | Excavation had exceeded 5,000 m, and the machine was 660 m from the river’s middle. | China’s State Council English-language site, carrying Xinhua photographs and reporting. |
| April 16, 2025; reported April 21 | The machine reached the halfway point of its underwater journey. | China Daily. |
| July 30, 2026; reported July 31 | The underwater section was completed after an 11.325 km underwater shield drive. | Xinhua said full tunnel completion was scheduled for the end of 2026. |
What the underwater breakthrough does—and does not—mean
The July 2026 milestone was completion of the underwater section, reported as an 11.325 km shield drive. It should not be conflated with completion of the full 14.25 km tunnel, which Xinhua said was scheduled for the end of 2026, or with the opening of the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu railway to passengers. The cited July report gives a completion target for the tunnel, not an operating date for rail service.
Likewise, the project’s reported design speed of 350 km/h describes the railway’s design, not an achieved train speed. Keeping the machine’s construction milestones, tunnel completion, and future railway operation separate makes the progress claims easier to interpret.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be concluded about the technology’s performance?
The available project and news accounts show that the system was integrated with the Pioneer shield machine, that the contractor reported a successful trial in November 2024, and that excavation subsequently advanced to the underwater breakthrough reported in July 2026. The accounts describe a broad set of intelligent functions and automatic operational decisions, but they do not independently establish how much the system changed construction efficiency, quality, safety, or staffing compared with conventional shield tunneling.

The published material does not support a quantified claim that the system made tunneling a given percentage faster, or that all project work was fully autonomous.
