For a healthy Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema), match light to the foliage, water only after the top layer of soil dries, and keep the roots out of standing water. Solid-green plants can handle less light than variegated or brightly colored selections. Keep the plant warm, use a pot with drainage holes, and place it where pets cannot reach it.

What is a Chinese evergreen?

Chinese evergreen is the common name for Aglaonema, a tropical foliage plant grown indoors for leaves that may be green, silver, gray, pink, red, or patterned, depending on the species and cultivar. Clemson Cooperative Extension and UF/IFAS describe typical plants as roughly 1 to 3 feet tall and wide, though size varies.

Its care is straightforward once you account for its foliage: green forms tolerate lower light, while more colorful leaves generally need brighter indirect light to retain their appearance.

Where should you place an Aglaonema?

Choose light according to foliage color

  • Solid-green cultivars: These are the best fit for a lower-light spot. Clemson Extension’s Home & Garden Information Center says, “The solid green cultivars will grow in low light.”
  • Green-and-silver or variegated cultivars: Provide low to moderate indirect light; foliage with stronger variegation may need more light than a solid-green plant.
  • High-color cultivars: UF/IFAS recommends bright indirect light to help maintain color.

Keep the leaves out of direct sun, which can scorch them. If a colorful plant loses vibrancy in a dim spot, move it closer to a window with filtered light rather than into harsh midday sun.

Keep it warm

Clemson Extension recommends 68–80 °F for best growth, says Aglaonema can tolerate temperatures as low as 55 °F, and notes sensitivity to chilling below 50 °F. UF/IFAS reports foliage injury below 45 °F. These are source-specific thresholds, not a single guaranteed limit for every cultivar or duration of exposure. Keep the plant away from cold drafts and chilly windows. Clemson says average household low to moderate humidity is generally workable.

How and when should you water Chinese evergreen?

Check the soil instead of following a fixed weekly schedule. Clemson Extension advises watering when the top 1–2 inches have dried. Push a finger into the mix: if it is still damp or feels cold, wait; if that upper layer is dry, water the soil.

Keep the mix lightly moist overall, but never leave the roots sitting in water. UF/IFAS cautions that overwatering can cause root rot and yellowing leaves. Empty excess water from the saucer, and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings; indoor temperature, light, and pot size all affect how quickly it dries.

What pot and soil help prevent root rot?

Use a container with drainage holes and a free-draining indoor potting mix. Clemson Extension recommends a standard soilless mix with extra humus. These are growing criteria rather than a requirement for a particular brand. A decorative outer pot is fine, but do not let water collect around the nursery pot’s base.

How do you propagate Aglaonema?

Division

Division is a practical home method, especially when the plant has developed basal shoots. In spring, separate a shoot with three or four leaves and, ideally, its own roots, as recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society for A. modestum. Pot the division in a draining houseplant mix and water carefully while it establishes.

Stem or tip cuttings

Clemson Extension also lists stem and tip cuttings as propagation options. Take a healthy section of stem or growing tip and place it in a suitable propagation medium. Because success depends on the cutting and growing conditions, avoid treating a particular rooting time as guaranteed.

What problems should you watch for?

  • Yellowing leaves or persistently wet soil: These can signal overwatering. Check drainage and let the upper soil dry before watering again.
  • Slow decline in a dense, wet mix: Poor drainage and excess moisture can contribute to root rot. Make sure the pot drains freely.
  • Visible insects or fine webbing: Clemson Extension lists mealybugs, aphids, scales, and mites among possible pests; UF/IFAS also notes mites and soilborne nematodes. Their presence is possible, not inevitable, and Clemson says diseases are rarely a problem in the home.

Is Chinese evergreen safe around pets?

No—keep Aglaonema out of reach of cats and dogs. Clemson Extension warns that its leaves can be toxic to pets. UF/IFAS identifies calcium oxalate crystals and cautions that all parts may cause dermatitis or internal issues if ingested. Place the plant where pets cannot chew or brush against it.
