If your Samsung refrigerator has stopped making ice, start with the freezer temperature: Samsung says it must be 0°F or colder for ice production, even when the ice maker is in the refrigerator compartment. Then check that ice production is enabled, the bucket is seated and the water supply is flowing. If ice is already in the bucket but will not come out, troubleshoot the dispenser instead of the ice maker.
First, determine whether the problem is making ice or dispensing it
Open the ice bucket and check what is inside. If it is empty, follow the production checks below. If it contains ice but the dispenser will not deliver it, the issue may be a dispenser lock, clumped ice or an obstruction. Use Samsung’s ice-dispenser troubleshooting guide for that separate problem.
Check the freezer temperature and cooling
Samsung’s stated threshold for ice production is a freezer temperature of 0°F or below, including on models with an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment. If the freezer is set warmer, lower the setting to 0°F or colder and turn on Power Freeze if your model has it. Recheck after three hours. If the refrigerator cannot reach or maintain that temperature, address the cooling problem before diagnosing the ice maker.
A newly installed refrigerator also needs time to cool before ice production can begin. Allow for that initial cooling period rather than repeatedly testing the maker.

Confirm the ice maker is on and the bucket is fitted correctly
- Check the control: Many models use an Ice Off indicator; when it is lit, ice production is off. Some top-freezer models instead have an Ice On indicator. Family Hub models may use Fridge Manager, and compatible refrigerators may expose the control in SmartThings. Dual ice-maker models can have separate controls, so check each one.
- Seat the bucket: Push it fully into place and make sure the relevant door or compartment closes and seals. On some models, a flashing Ice Off indicator can mean the bucket is not correctly installed.
- Check bucket orientation and contents: Some dual cubed/ice-bites systems require the bucket to face a particular direction. Remove scoops and other objects; the bucket should contain ice only.
Controls and bucket arrangements differ by refrigerator configuration. If the labels or fit are unclear, use the manual for the exact model.
Check water flow, the supply valve and the filter
Low household water pressure or a restricted filter can stop production or result in small cubes. For a model with a water dispenser, Samsung’s flow check is to dispense six ounces (three-quarters of a cup) in less than ten seconds into a measuring cup. If flow is too slow, confirm the home supply valve is fully open.
Samsung’s guide describes a second flow check with the filter removed for applicable models. Filter-removal testing has model and manufacturing-date caveats, so consult the exact refrigerator manual before trying it. If flow improves with the filter removed, the filter or household pressure may be involved. Samsung says that if a new filter is installed and flow passes only without it, household pressure is too low. For a unit that has never worked properly since its water line was adjusted, Samsung says to confirm at least 20 psi and recommends getting help from a plumber. Reverse-osmosis systems may also leave pressure too low for the refrigerator.

For refrigerators with a filter but no dispenser, check that the supply valve is open and that the filter has not exceeded its useful life. Samsung describes its filter rating as 300 gallons, or about six months of average household use; actual replacement timing depends on use and water conditions. Samsung recommends its own-brand filters. If replacement appears necessary, match the filter to the refrigerator’s exact model number rather than choosing by appearance.

Use the Test button only for your ice-maker configuration
The Test button’s location and procedure depend on where the maker is installed. Use the instructions for the exact model and configuration; freezer-door, refrigerator-compartment and side-by-side freezer procedures are not interchangeable.

Freezer-door ice maker
For the configuration covered by Samsung’s freezer-door reset guide, remove the bucket and find Test on the left underside of the ice maker. Hold the button until you hear a chime, then reinstall the bucket until it clicks. On some units, visible movement matters even if there is no chime. A flashing Ice Off indicator can signal that the bucket is not seated correctly.

Follow Samsung’s separate refrigerator-compartment and side-by-side freezer procedure for these configurations. Access and button location vary by model.

What to expect from a test
Samsung’s general guide says to hold Test until a chime, which may take up to ten seconds. If there is no response, turn the refrigerator off at the power source for two minutes, restore power and try once more. Samsung describes a test cycle of about six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment maker and about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment maker. Watch for tray movement and water filling; if the test does not bring in water, check water pressure and supply.

Do not keep pressing Test after the tray fills. Repeated tests can overflow water or jam ice. If the instructions for your model differ from the general guidance, follow the model-specific guide.

After you correct a setting or supply issue, Samsung says ice should begin returning within three hours. Normal quantities may take up to 24 hours to return; Samsung gives approximately two trays every three hours as a general reference, not a guaranteed output for every model. Dispense ice from time to time so it does not pile up at one end of the bucket and trigger a full-bucket condition.
When to arrange service
If the freezer is at or below 0°F, the maker is enabled, the bucket is correctly seated and water flow is adequate, but no ice returns within three hours after troubleshooting, Samsung directs users to request service. Service is also the sensible next step if the refrigerator cannot cool properly or the model-specific test does not work after the permitted power cycle.
