Gravel can bring color and texture to a landscape while serving as mulch, a path, or a patio surface. Choose by use as well as appearance: rounded gravel stays loose underfoot, while angular gravel packs more firmly. Then coordinate its color with plants and nearby hardscape, and plan for containment and site drainage.
Choose gravel by how the space will be used
Stone shape affects footing and stability. The UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County distinguishes river-run rounded stone from crushed angular stone: rounded pieces can slip and do not pack solidly, while angular pieces can compact into a firmer surface. Smaller angular pieces are easier and more comfortable to walk on, according to its gravel pathway guidance.
| Gravel type | Surface behavior | Best fit | Consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rounded river-run gravel, including pea gravel | Loose; pieces shift and do not pack solidly | Garden beds, decorative areas, and patios where a loose surface is acceptable | Can be difficult to walk on and less stable for furniture. Larger supporting stones can provide firmer places to set furniture. |
| Angular crushed gravel | Pieces interlock and pack more firmly | Frequently used paths and patio areas where a firmer surface is preferred | Smaller pieces are generally easier and more comfortable to walk on. |
Neither shape is right for every landscape. Match it to the traffic, desired firmness, and willingness to maintain a loose surface.
Use gravel color to complement plants and hardscape
Start with existing materials: nearby stone, paving, brick, or the house exterior. Colorado State University PlantTalk recommends choosing gravel or stone mulch similar in color to the rocks in a rock garden in its color guidance. A restrained palette lets foliage and flowers provide seasonal contrast without making the ground cover compete for attention.

Ideas for beds, borders, paths, and patios
Give planting beds a clean gravel finish
Use gravel as a visible ground cover around plants, choosing a color that relates to nearby stone rather than competing with foliage. For a defined edge, pair it with edging so the gravel stays distinct from lawn or adjoining beds.
Mark a bed border with a change in texture or color
A narrow band of gravel can visually separate a planting bed from a path or lawn. Stone, brick, and steel are among the edging options identified in extension guidance; select a material that suits the surrounding construction and helps hold the loose gravel in place.

Lay a naturalistic garden path
Gravel fits an informal landscape, but choose its shape according to how often the path will be used. For regular foot traffic, smaller angular gravel provides a firmer, more comfortable surface than loose rounded stone. UF/IFAS lists gravel among pervious walkway choices in its walkway guidance.
Set stepping stones into gravel
Broad, flat stepping stones can create a more stable walking line through gravel while retaining a permeable surface around them. UF/IFAS recognizes gravel and stepping stones as pervious walkway options; the combination can suit an informal route through a garden.

Use pea gravel for a deliberately loose patio area
Rounded pea gravel can work where shifting underfoot is acceptable and furniture stability is not the priority. If seating is part of the plan, larger supporting stones can provide firmer feet for furniture. For a patio used often, consider angular gravel instead.
Plan containment and drainage before installation
Loose gravel migrates beyond its intended area unless it is contained. Edging along paths and beds helps keep the material in place; UF/IFAS and North Carolina Cooperative Extension both discuss edging in their landscape-path guidance (UF/IFAS; North Carolina Cooperative Extension).

Gravel is pervious, but permeability alone does not solve drainage for every site. Soil, grade, and the direction of runoff still matter. UF/IFAS gives a slight 2% cross-slope to one side of a walkway as an example that can encourage drainage—not a universal engineering specification. Assess the site before setting the path grade, particularly where water could collect near buildings or flow toward neighboring areas.

A useful selection checklist:
- Will the surface be decorative, walked on often, or used under furniture?
- Do rounded stones suit the desired loose look, or is a firmer angular surface more useful?
- Does the color work with nearby plants, stone, and hardscape—and will glare or visible litter be a concern?
- How will edging keep gravel contained?
- How will the site’s soil, slope, and runoff affect drainage?
- Can a local supplier provide the desired size, color, quantity, and delivery?
