It needs little building skill, holds a useful volume of yard waste, and is simple to move when it is time to turn or empty the pile. If you want a sturdier structure, better containment, or separate stages for multiple batches, a pallet or framed-wood design may suit your yard better.
Choose a build that fits your yard and workload
A bin contains composting material; it does not make compost on its own. Your choice comes down to how much yard waste you have, how much space you can spare, whether you can reuse materials, and how much access and construction effort you want.
| Build | Best fit | Space and capacity | Effort and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wire hoop | First-time builders who want the simplest, easiest-to-move enclosure | Wisconsin Extension says it holds eight to ten 30-gallon bags of yard materials | Little or no building skill; good airflow, but less effective at containing small or wet material and more exposed to drying |
| Wire or snow-fence cylinder | Gardeners who want a larger, movable pile and already have suitable fencing | Iowa State’s example is 4 feet in diameter and 3–4 feet tall | Easy to reposition for turning; limited insulation and containment |
| Pallet enclosure | People with reusable pallets who want a more solid structure and a front access point | Colorado State’s published example is a single bin; specific dimensions are not stated | Fasten pallet sides with wire and deck screws; hinges can make the front accessible. The cited cost is a source-specific estimate, not a current quote |
| Framed wood-and-wire portable bin | Builders who want a more finished, movable enclosure and are comfortable assembling frames | Wisconsin’s plan uses four square frames; finished dimensions are not stated | Above-average building skills; more cutting and hardware than a hoop |
| Three-bin system | Gardeners with more yard waste, room, and time to manage batches | Three chambers hold collection, active decomposition, and curing or storage material | Supports continuous production, but uses more space and requires more turning and management |
Cost depends heavily on what you already have. Colorado State Extension gives $5 to $25 for its pallet-bin example and $20 to $80 for its three-chamber example; these are figures in that publication, not guaranteed current local prices. Reused pallets or fencing can lower your outlay, while buying lumber, mesh, fasteners, and hinges adds up.
Build the simplest option: a hardware-cloth hoop
University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension recommends hardware cloth rather than thin chicken wire for a sturdier enclosure that holds its shape. Its plan calls for 12.5 feet of 36-inch-wide, 1/2-inch hardware cloth and four clips or wire ties. That is enough material for a roughly 4-foot-diameter cylinder. Wisconsin Extension describes the capacity as eight to ten 30-gallon bags of yard materials.

Materials and tools
- 12.5 feet of 36-inch-wide, 1/2-inch hardware cloth
- Four clips or wire ties
- Heavy-duty wire or tin snips
- Work gloves and a file for dealing with cut edges
Assembly
- Put on work gloves. Cut the hardware cloth to length with heavy-duty snips, cutting close to a cross wire as Wisconsin Extension recommends.
- File or fold over any sharp cut ends so they do not poke or snag.
- Bend the mesh into a circle, overlap the ends, and fasten the overlap with four clips or wire ties.
- Set the hoop on level ground. Optional stakes can steady it, but they make the enclosure harder to move for turning or harvest.
For comparison, Iowa State Extension describes a 4-foot-diameter cylinder made from 12.5 feet of woven wire or snow fence, 3–4 feet tall. The length follows the circumference calculation of diameter × 3.14. A movable fence enclosure can be peeled away and repositioned around the pile when you turn it.
Use pallets for a sturdier, low-cost enclosure
If you can source sound pallets, they can form a more substantial bin without requiring a full lumber frame. Colorado State Extension’s example fastens pallet sides with wire and deck screws and adds hinges to the front for access. A hinged front makes it easier to add material, turn the pile, and remove finished compost.

- Twin chambers: Two separate chambers allow one side to finish composting while leaving the other side available to add fresh wastes; Constant alternation of the two sides will create an uninterrupted stream of nutritious compost
- 360⁰ Tumbling Design: The rotating design prevents you from digging or mixing the pile by hand; And the deep fins on eight panels make it easier to turn the compost bin
- Excellent Aeration: Air vents can make the air fully circulate and will not cause an explosion due to excessive internal pressure; Deep fins can better break the clumps, which is conducive to the full fermentation of oxygen
- Sturdy & Durable Construction: Constructed of premium metal frame and high-quality pp plastic body, this tumbling composter is corrosion-resistant, weathering-resistant, sturdy, and durable for long-lasting service life
- Garden Gloves Included: The gloves that not only protect your hands from injury, but are also waterproof, making them easy to clean; With 4 durable ABS plastic claws for easy digging, planting and other gardening work
The cited $5 to $25 estimate is Colorado State’s published example, not a present-day price guarantee. Check that reused pallets are in usable condition, and plan the front opening around how you will reach the material. Wood structures tend to dry out less than open wire bins, though they generally cost more to buy or build.
Build a portable framed bin if you have carpentry skills
Wisconsin Extension’s wood-and-wire plan is more involved than a hoop. It specifies four 12-foot cedar or non-arsenic pressure-treated 2×4s, 12 feet of 36-inch-wide, 1/2-inch hardware cloth, screws, hinges, wire staples, adhesive, and hook-and-eye latches.

The plan cuts the lumber into 3-foot lengths to make four square frames, attaches mesh to the frames, hinges the frames in pairs, and uses latches to close the remaining sides. The result is designed to be portable, but the frame assembly and hardware make it a better fit for someone with above-average building skills than for a no-tools quick build. The plan does not state a total finished size or current material cost.
Choose a three-bin system for continuous batches
A three-chamber setup separates material by stage: one bin for collection, one for active decomposition, and one for curing or storage. Colorado State Extension’s example costs $20 to $80 in its publication; that is a published estimate rather than a current quote. The arrangement is useful when you have enough yard material to keep multiple batches moving, but it takes more room and effort than a single bin. Iowa State Extension notes the added space, time, and turning required.

Keep airflow, moisture, and access in balance
Open wire sides ventilate well, but they also expose the pile to wind. Colorado State Extension notes that wire bins can dry faster in drying winds and that plastic covers or tarps are often used to protect the outer layer. Keep a cover manageable so you can still add material and aerate the pile. Wood structures dry out less, but cost more to buy or build.
Plan access before assembling the enclosure. You need to reach the material to turn it and remove finished compost; a movable hoop or fence cylinder makes repositioning straightforward, while a hinged pallet front or latching frame provides an opening. Airflow should remain available rather than being sealed off by a cover or tightly packed structure.

Check local rules before placing a bin
A compost bin is optional, though an enclosure can contain material and help deter animals. Virginia Cooperative Extension advises checking HOA rules and local ordinances because they may restrict a compost bin’s type, size, or location. Also consider where the pile will sit and how accessible it will be for adding material and maintaining it. Pile size and temperature affect whether certain problem materials should be included; a small DIY bin should not be assumed to reliably sanitize compost.
