Changing a Fuse in Christmas Lights: What You Need and How to Do It

Replace a Christmas-light fuse only when the product has a user-accessible compartment. Unplug first, match the specified fuse exactly, and stop if the string is damaged or the replacement fuse opens again.

You can replace a Christmas-light fuse only if the string has a user-accessible fuse compartment and its instructions allow replacement. Unplug the string first, then use only the fuse type and rating specified on the product or in its manual. If the plug or cord is damaged, the compartment is sealed, or a new fuse opens again, stop using the string.

What you need before you start

  • The light string’s instructions or packaging, to confirm that its fuse is intended to be replaced and to identify the exact specification.
  • A replacement fuse matching the specified rating and type. Check the light set or manual rather than relying on a generic fuse assortment or the rating used by another string.

You do not need to pry open a plug or improvise a tool. If the product does not provide an accessible fuse compartment, do not open its plug.

How to change the fuse

  1. Unplug the light string. Do not open the fuse compartment or handle the fuse while the string is connected to an outlet.
  2. Inspect the plug and cord. If either is cracked, charred, melted, or otherwise damaged, do not use the string.
  3. Confirm the fuse is replaceable. Check the plug and product instructions for a user-accessible compartment and the required fuse type and rating. If there is no accessible compartment, or the instructions do not permit consumer replacement, stop.
  4. Open the designated compartment. Use the cover or slider and removal method shown in the product instructions. Do not force a sealed or damaged plug.
  5. Fit the specified replacement. Match both the rating and type. Never guess, substitute a higher-rated fuse, or bypass the fuse.
  6. Close the compartment fully. If the holder has a channel for the cord and latches, position the cord as directed and make sure every latch is engaged before reconnecting.
  7. Stop if the replacement fuse opens again. Discontinue use and contact the manufacturer or replace the light string; do not keep replacing fuses or defeat the protection.

What size fuse do Christmas lights use?

There is no single fuse rating for all Christmas lights. The required rating and physical type vary by product, so use the value printed on the plug or identified in the instructions. For example, one Puleo International instruction sheet specifies a 5 A, 125 V fuse for its extension cord and a 3 A, 125 V fuse for its light strings; those are product-specific examples, not general ratings. See the Home Depot troubleshooting guidance and the Puleo International instruction sheet.

Why the fuse compartment must close correctly

A fuse is part of a light string’s overcurrent protection. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identifies minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, and overcurrent protection—including fuses—as observable safety characteristics for seasonal and decorative lighting; it says these characteristics reduce the risk of electrical shock or fire. Its guidance concerns U.S. seasonal lighting with nominal 120 V input, not every country or product. Read the CPSC seasonal-lighting guidance.

A CPSC notice dated November 25, 1994, addressed a particular Gilbert fuseholder. It warned that the cord needed to lie flat in the holder’s channel and both latches needed to be fastened before use. The notice reported two complaints of sparking and charring or melting, with no injuries reported at the time. That is historical, product-specific information—not a failure rate for current light strings. The notice’s instruction was: “Consumers should close the fuseholder completely before plugging in the lightstring or decorative outfit.” Read the CPSC fuseholder notice.

When to stop instead of repairing

  • The plug or cord is damaged, charred, or melted.
  • The plug has no user-accessible fuse compartment, or the manufacturer’s instructions do not authorize replacement.
  • You cannot confirm the specified replacement fuse.
  • A correctly matched replacement fuse opens again.

In these cases, do not use the string. Follow the manufacturer’s advice or replace it. Electrical Safety First’s guidance is UK-specific for plugs and voltage, but its general advice to follow manufacturer instructions and avoid using lights with damaged wires or plugs is relevant. See Electrical Safety First’s Christmas-light safety advice.
