To change bandsaw tires, disconnect the saw from power, remove the blade and wheel only as your saw’s manual directs, clean the wheel, fit a compatible tire evenly, and check blade tracking and operation before cutting. Installation details differ by saw and tire, so follow both manufacturers’ instructions rather than treating one method as universal.
Choose a compatible replacement tire
Before ordering, check the bandsaw’s make and model, wheel diameter, and the tire’s width and profile. Compare those details with the replacement maker’s compatibility information. A tire listed for a particular wheel size is not automatically compatible with every saw of that size.
For example, Grizzly’s instruction sheet lists separate urethane tire models for its 14-, 17-, 19-, and 21-inch saw sizes. Grizzly also lists T23071 as a pair of urethane tires for 17-inch bandsaws. These are product-specific examples, not a cross-brand fit chart; verify your saw’s requirements before buying. Grizzly tire instructions and the T23071 product listing provide those examples.
Rubber and urethane tires may both be available for some saws. Compare material, fit, installation directions, and whether the product is sold as a pair. Grizzly recommends replacing its tires as a pair; do not assume that recommendation or a supplier’s material preference applies to every saw.

Prepare the saw and work area
- Disconnect power. Unplug the saw and disconnect it from any power source before working. Follow the saw’s safety instructions to prevent accidental startup. Wear gloves when handling the wheel or tire if recommended by the manufacturer.
- Remove the blade and wheel as directed by the saw manual. The correct procedure depends on the machine. Some tire instructions describe working with wheels in place, while others call for wheel removal. Use the manual for your specific saw rather than improvising a removal procedure.
- Gather optional aids. A flat-head screwdriver, clamps or a cable tie, and—in some instructions—a wooden dowel can help with positioning or holding a tire. These are optional aids, not specialized tools every installation requires.
Remove the old tire and clean the wheel
Take off the old tire and clean the wheel thoroughly so dirt or residue does not interfere with the new tire seating evenly. The tire maker’s instructions should specify any additional preparation needed for that product. Do not add adhesive unless the instructions for your replacement tire call for it.
Fit the replacement tire evenly
Follow the tire maker’s method. Some instructions have you stretch the tire over the wheel and center it; clamps or a cable tie may help hold it while you work around the wheel. A screwdriver shaft or wooden dowel may help position the tire, but use care not to damage it. Check the tire around its full circumference so it sits evenly rather than twisted or bunched.

Warming advice varies. POWERTEC says hot water can make its tires more flexible, while Sulphur Grove Tool warns against boiling water and excessive heat, which may alter urethane characteristics. Do not assume that warming is appropriate for every tire or choose a temperature on your own: use only the replacement maker’s specified procedure.

Reinstall and check the saw before cutting
- Reinstall the wheel and blade using the saw manual’s procedure.
- Check that the tire remains evenly seated and that the blade is installed and adjusted as the manual specifies.
- Reconnect power and run the saw long enough to check for unusual vibration or noise and to confirm that the blade tracks properly.
- If the tire shifts, the saw vibrates or makes unusual noise, or the blade does not track correctly, stop the saw and disconnect power before inspecting the installation. Correct the problem according to the saw and tire instructions before cutting.
Grizzly’s support guidance specifically calls for checking vibration, noise, and blade tracking after reinstalling the wheel. Do not proceed to a cut until the saw runs normally and the blade tracks as intended.
