January is commonly associated with two birth flowers: the carnation and the snowdrop. Carnations bring colorful, long-lasting blooms and meanings that vary by color and culture; snowdrops are small white flowers often among the first to appear in late winter. The pairing is a popular convention, not a universally governed designation.

What is January’s birth flower?

Many birth-flower guides name both the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) and the snowdrop (Galanthus) for January. The Old Farmer’s Almanac and LEGO’s birth-flower guide use this pairing, but these references do not establish a single global authority or a definitive origin date for the tradition. It is best understood as a widely used contemporary custom.

What do carnations mean?

Carnation symbolism depends on context rather than following one universal color code. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew associates red carnations with love and affection, white with good luck, purple with a mercurial nature, and yellow with rejection or disappointment. Meanings can differ across cultures and occasions, so it is worth considering the recipient and setting before choosing a color.

Kew also notes the carnation’s association with Mother’s Day in the United States and with political movements in particular countries. Those are historical and cultural associations, not meanings that apply everywhere.

What does a snowdrop symbolize?

Snowdrops are often presented as hopeful signs of the new season because they can flower while winter is still underway. That is a familiar popular interpretation, but the cited botanical and birth-flower references do not establish a definitive, universal symbolism for the flower.

How do carnations and snowdrops differ?

Feature Carnation Snowdrop
Botanical name Dianthus caryophyllus Galanthus; common snowdrop is Galanthus nivalis
Appearance Long stems and flowers around 3–5 cm across; cultivated varieties come in many colors. Small, white, bell-like blooms that hang from thin stems, with green markings on the shorter inner petals.
Seasonal role A cultivated ornamental and cut flower. An early-flowering bulb; Kew gives January to March as the common snowdrop flowering period.
Meaning Color-specific and culturally varied associations are documented by Kew. Often interpreted as a sign of seasonal renewal, though a universal meaning is not established by the cited references.
Growing guidance available here The cited Kew page establishes ornamental use but does not provide a full cultivation guide. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends partial shade and soil that is not permanently wet.

Can I grow snowdrops in my garden?

Snowdrops suit a spot in partial shade, often beneath deciduous trees or shrubs. The Royal Horticultural Society says they grow in most soils except permanently wet ones. Very dry, sandy ground is a poor choice, particularly where summer sun dries the soil around the bulbs. Local climate and the species or cultivar can affect how well they perform.

For carnations, Kew confirms their ornamental and garden use, but the cited page does not provide a complete planting or care schedule. For broader cut-flower beds, the RHS recommends fertile, weed-free soil and notes that organic matter can help retain moisture and improve soil structure. That general advice is not a species-specific carnation growing guide, and January should not be treated as the ideal planting month for both flowers.

When do snowdrops flower?

Kew lists common snowdrops as flowering from January to March. Its long-running garden observations describe a change in the timing of first flowers: “While in the 1950s common snowdrop flowers often appeared around the end of February, since the 1990s the first signs of their delicate, white flowers are seen in January.” This comparison describes observations in Kew’s gardens; it is not a national average or a guarantee of when snowdrops will appear in a particular garden.

What is a good January birth-flower gift?

A bouquet of carnations offers a choice of colors and an opportunity to select a shade with a meaning that suits the recipient. A snowdrop-themed gift can reflect the flower’s early-season character; if giving a living plant or bulbs, choose legitimate cultivated stock rather than collecting plants from the wild.

LEGO’s official birth-flower page also connects January’s carnation and snowdrop pairing with Botanicals gifts and decor. A building set is a different kind of gift from a bouquet, so check the current listing for the specific product and its availability.

Snowdrops, sourcing, and conservation

Kew notes that all Galanthus species are listed in CITES Appendix II and identifies habitat change and over-collecting as threats to common snowdrops in the wild. This is a reason to favor cultivated, legitimately sourced bulbs or plants—not a claim that every cultivated snowdrop is threatened or unlawfully traded.
