No clear finish can reliably keep padauk’s fresh orange-red color unchanged. Padauk naturally darkens toward brown as it ages; reducing strong light exposure and choosing a clear finish labeled for UV protection may slow the change, but neither stops it.
Why does padauk change color?
The shift is a property of the wood, not automatically a sign that the finish has failed. Freshly surfaced padauk can be vivid orange-red, then darken toward brown over time. Light exposure and oxidation are identified as contributors, and a clear coating does not permanently lock in the wood’s fresh color. What can you do to slow the change?
- Limit strong light. Keep the piece out of direct sunlight where practical. Less direct exposure may help, but it cannot eliminate oxidation or guarantee stable color.
- Consider a UV-protective clear finish. Check the current manufacturer label for an explicit claim of UV inhibitors or UV protection. This is a way to delay fading, not a guarantee that padauk will stay orange.
- Set expectations before the project. If retaining the exact bright orange is essential, no clear finish cited by these sources guarantees that result.
Woodcraft describes UV-inhibiting finish as a way to slow color loss, while warning that the change eventually continues: Woodsense: Spotlight on Padauk.
How should you choose and apply a finish?
There is no established universally best finish in the available practical comparisons. Choose based on the product’s stated UV protection, how it changes padauk’s initial appearance, the application risks, and the light exposure the finished piece will receive. Test the complete finishing system on scrap from the project if possible.

Account for color bleed with shellac
Padauk can bleed color when shellac is brushed or wiped on. Woodcraft recommends spraying several light coats to seal the color before brushing or wiping on later coats. Follow the finish maker’s application and safety directions.
Check drying when using oil-based varnish
Padauk’s natural oils may retard drying for some oil-based varnishes; water-based finishes are less affected, according to Woodcraft. Test first rather than assuming a finish will cure normally on your stock.

Treat reported finish combinations as starting points, not rankings
Woodworkers Source reported that dewaxed shellac under a UV-protected water-based topcoat was its preferred result among its samples. The author described about a dozen samples and one week of direct-sun exposure; this was an author-reported, short practical test, not a controlled long-term study. Read the account.
A separate Woodworkers Source article compared six finishes on African padauk sections outdoors in direct sunlight for 21 days. Its author noted that the test period was short, so the results do not establish which finish will protect padauk for years or perform best under other conditions. See the comparison.
