Yes—blue-looking wood exists. The 2009 article that matches this title is about Blue Mahoe, a hardwood identified there as Talipariti elatum. Its description is more blue-gray than vivid “Smurf blue,” and it should not be confused with wood colored by fungal staining or with other naturally blue-green materials.
What is the blue wood in the original article?
Sean Michael Ragan’s June 24, 2009, article for Make: identifies the wood as Blue Mahoe, or Talipariti elatum. The article describes the tree as native to the Caribbean and Jamaica’s national tree. Ragan’s own qualification captures the appearance: “OK, so it’s not like smurf-blue, but still: Blue hardwood!”
That identifies the material the title refers to; it does not establish that all Blue Mahoe lumber is uniformly blue, or explain the cause of its color. The article also says the tree “grows very quickly,” but gives no figure or study, so that should be treated as an attributed description rather than a quantified growth claim.
Not all blue-looking wood is the same
A blue or blue-green appearance can describe different materials and processes. A January 23, 2026 secondary overview discusses fungal sapstain that can make wood look blue-gray, blue-green staining associated with Chlorociboria aeruginascens, and a color change in Guaiacum officinale, known as Lignum Vitae. These are distinct examples, not evidence that any of those mechanisms causes Blue Mahoe’s color.
