Yes. Genetic engineering and genome editing can change flower color, form, fragrance, flowering time, vase life, and resistance to disease or environmental stress. But “better” depends on what a grower or buyer values, and an experimental result is not the same as a flower that is commercially available. Novel color is the clearest documented commercial use; many other traits remain research targets.
What counts as a better flower?
A flower bred for a new color may appeal to a buyer, while a grower may value predictable flowering schedules, longer-lasting blooms, or resistance to disease and stress. Genetic techniques can target several of these traits, but the practical result depends on the species, cultivar, and genetic background. Reviews of ornamental-plant biotechnology describe targets including pigment and color, fragrance, morphology and plant architecture, vase life, and stress or disease resistance (Noman et al., 2017; 2020 review).
How genetic engineering and gene editing change flowers
Genetic engineering is a broad term for methods that alter a plant’s genetic material. Transgenic engineering can introduce genetic material, while genome editing makes targeted changes to DNA. These are distinct from conventional hybridization, which combines traits through breeding, and from mutation breeding. The method matters for how a change is made and may affect how regulators classify the resulting plant.
Flower color illustrates why there is no single “color switch.” Pigments and the pathways that produce and regulate them interact with the plant’s species and genetic background. Changing a gene can shift a flower toward a different hue or alter the distribution of color, but it does not guarantee a precise shade in every cultivar.

What researchers have changed so far
A 2026 systematic review describes CRISPR/Cas9 experiments in ornamentals that altered flower color, longevity, and flowering time. The outcomes are examples of what has been achieved in particular plants—not proof that the same edit will produce the same effect in another cultivar, or that the edited varieties are sold.
Color
The review reports color changes in petunia, gentian, torenia, poinsettia, and Japanese morning glory. Reported shifts included changes toward pink, purple, white, or orange. These results show that editing can affect color pathways, but the shifts were species- and experiment-specific rather than a general ability to create any desired color.

Longer-lasting blooms
In petunia, edits to genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis were associated with lower ethylene and longer blossom longevity. In Japanese morning glory, editing a senescence-related gene was associated with delayed petal senescence. These are research findings, not evidence that the resulting lines are commercially available (2026 systematic review).
Flowering time
The review also reports earlier flowering in edited chrysanthemum and petunia. For commercial growers, flowering time can affect production schedules; the results apply to the specific plants studied and should not be generalized to all flowers.

Which engineered flowers have reached the market?
Review literature identifies violet carnations and a blue rose as engineered ornamental products that reached commercial markets (2017 review; 2020 review). The 2017 review described novel color as the chief commercial benefit it observed and noted that only a small number of engineered ornamental varieties had been field tested. That is a publication-era assessment, not a current inventory of products or retailers. It does not establish where a named cultivar can be bought today.
For a buyer, the useful distinction is the evidence stage: a laboratory or greenhouse result, a field-tested variety, or a documented commercial cultivar. A result at one stage does not establish the next.

How to assess a claimed improvement
- Identify the trait. Is the claim about color, fragrance, form, flowering time, longevity, or resistance?
- Check the evidence stage. Look for whether the result is experimental, field-tested, or commercially released.
- Match the plant and cultivar. An outcome in one species or genetic background is not a guarantee for another.
- Distinguish the technique. “Gene edited” does not mean “transgenic,” and neither term means the plant is automatically unregulated.
- Check the relevant market and jurisdiction. A documented commercial product does not prove current local availability, and regulations depend on place and technique.
What the rules mean in the European Union
The EU’s rules for plants obtained by targeted mutagenesis and cisgenesis were adopted on 17 June 2026 and entered into force on 16 July 2026. They are scheduled to apply from 17 July 2028. Until that date, those plants and their food and feed products remain subject to existing EU GMO rules, according to the European Commission. This timeline is specific to the EU and to the named technique categories; it is not a global rule for ornamental flowers.
Regulatory classification has varied across jurisdictions and techniques, as reviews of ornamental genome editing note (2020 review). For a flower sold in a particular country, the applicable local rules and the plant’s specific technique matter.
