The best walk-behind mower depends on your lawn and how much effort you want to put into mowing. For a small, flat yard, a simple push mower—or a manual reel mower—may be enough. For hills, uneven ground, or a larger lawn, self-propulsion can make the job easier. Then compare battery and gas power, clipping options, storage, and maintenance before choosing a model.
Start with lawn size, terrain, and effort
A push mower moves only when you push it, so it is usually a straightforward choice for a small, relatively level lawn. A self-propelled mower drives its wheels for you, reducing the effort needed to move across the yard. The trade-off is that the machine’s drive features may add complexity; compare the exact model’s controls and handling.
Lowe’s identifies lawns larger than 1/2 acre and hilly terrain as situations where self-propulsion may be useful. Treat that as a selection heuristic, not a strict cutoff: slope, obstacles, grass conditions, and your physical comfort all affect how tiring a mower will be. Husqvarna recommends all-wheel drive for hills and uneven terrain, but check the drive system and operating guidance for the mower you are considering.
Husqvarna offers another way to think about the workload: it says every ¼ acre of lawn mowed means a walk of one to two miles. That is the manufacturer’s rule of thumb, not an independently validated measurement. Husqvarna Push Mower Buying Guide

Choose battery, gas, or manual power
Battery mowers
Battery models avoid gasoline and are described by Lowe’s as quieter and lower-maintenance than gas mowers. Their practical limit is how much lawn they can mow on a charge. Check the exact model’s stated runtime, charging time, included battery capacity, and whether the battery platform works with equipment you already own. Runtime varies by model and conditions, so one mower’s figure should not be applied to another.
Gas mowers
Gas models can be refueled rather than paused for a battery to recharge, but they need recurring engine care. Lowe’s identifies oil, spark-plug, and filter maintenance among the upkeep to expect. Check the owner’s manual for the schedule and supplies required by the specific mower. Lowe’s lawn mower buying guide
Manual reel mowers
For a tiny, flat lawn, a reel mower is a compact, quiet option with no fuel or battery to charge. You provide the power, so it takes more physical effort than a powered mower, and the blades or knives need care. Its narrower fit makes it less suitable when the lawn is large, sloped, or difficult to mow manually.

Decide what should happen to the clippings
Walk-behind mowers may mulch clippings, collect them in a bag, or discharge them to the side or rear. The available modes vary by model, so confirm that your preferred option is included or supported before buying.

- Mulching: Chops clippings and returns them to the lawn. Husqvarna describes it as useful for frequent mowing; it may be a poor match if you prefer a clipped, debris-free appearance or mow infrequently and leave long grass.
- Bagging or collection: Keeps clippings contained for disposal and can reduce the need to rake. Lowe’s also notes that a bag can help with leaf collection. Collection adds the task of emptying the bag, and capacity affects how often you stop.
- Side or rear discharge: Expels clippings instead of collecting them. Check the mower’s included deflector or discharge setup and whether it suits your yard’s layout and preferences.
Lowe’s guide to mower types and clipping options and Husqvarna’s push mower guide explain these trade-offs.
Check fit, controls, and storage
Comfort and convenience can matter as much as power. Before choosing a mower, compare its deck width, cutting-height adjustment, bag capacity, handle design, starting method, maneuverability, and storage footprint. Wider decks may cover more ground per pass, while a narrower mower may be easier to move around obstacles and store; weigh those needs against your yard.

- Exclusive and industry-leading CVT (Continuously variable transmission) offers superior speed variability to adjust the mower pace to your walking speed by simply selecting the 6-speed shift lever
- Exclusive rubber tires with aggressive spiked tread pattern significantly increase overall traction and maneuverability
- Starting made easier with the automatic choke system, no need to prime or choke the engine
- Quickly clean the underside of the cutting deck with the deck cleanout port
- Single-lever deck adjustment for quickly setting your mow height
Look for handles that adjust to the operator, accessible controls, and a starting method you can use comfortably. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s mower fact sheet also calls attention to chute deflectors and cutting-height adjustment. If storage space is tight, check whether the handle folds or the mower is designed for vertical storage, and follow its manual for safe storage instructions.

Compare exact models, not just mower categories
Once you know the type of mower that suits your yard, compare model-level details. For a battery mower, prioritize verified runtime, charge time, and included battery capacity. For a self-propelled mower, examine the drive type and speed control, especially if you mow slopes. For any mower, consider cutting performance in your preferred clipping mode, weight, bag capacity, ease of adjustment, warranty, service access, and availability of compatible replacement parts.

Replacement blades, collection bags, and batteries are compatibility-specific. Use the exact make and model—and, for batteries, the correct platform—when checking fit. A category label such as “walk-behind” or “battery mower” is not enough to establish compatibility.

Check safety and compliance
In the United States, consumer walk-behind power lawn mowers must comply with the federal Safety Standard for Walk-Behind Power Lawn Mowers, 16 CFR Part 1205. The CPSC says the standard requires on-product labeling and that manufacturers or importers must issue a General Certificate of Conformity for covered mowers. This is a compliance requirement, not a substitute for following the mower’s manual.
