A model can teach you how a motor, belt, sensors and controller work together. For an occupied entrance, use a purpose-designed operator matched to the door and have the installation assessed for its actual conditions and local requirements.
First decide what you are building
The right approach depends on the door’s scale and use. A tabletop demonstration can use hobby electronics and a fabricated track. A full-size residential or commercial entrance needs an operator system designed for the door’s weight, dimensions, travel and configuration—not simply a stronger version of the model motor.
| Option | Best fit | What it involves | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model-scale DIY | Educational demonstration or low-force prototype | Controller, motor and driver, belt drive, activation and obstacle sensors, limit switches, and fabricated supports | A working model does not establish safe performance for an occupied entrance. |
| Complete operator kit | A door that matches the kit’s stated configuration and limits | Typically an integrated drive, controller, rail and hangers, plus some controls or sensors; contents vary by product | Compatibility and installation conditions must be checked for the exact door and kit. |
| Commercial installation | Pedestrian entrances where the system must be selected, installed and assessed as a complete application | Door-specific operator, mechanics, controls, safety devices, setup and service considerations | Requirements depend on the site and jurisdiction; a vendor claim alone does not establish compliance for every installation. |
How a model-scale opener works
Projectech documents a model using a PIR sensor to request opening, an ESP32 controller, an L298N motor driver, a DC gear motor and belt drive to move the panel, and an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor intended to detect an obstacle during closing. Limit switches, a timeout, state-machine firmware and an LCD status display are also part of the described project. See Projectech’s Automatic Sliding Door Opener Project.
At a high level, the controller detects an opening request, drives the panel to its open limit, holds it for a chosen interval, then closes while monitoring the intended protected area. An obstacle signal can stop or reverse the model; a limit, fault or timeout should end motion. Projectech cautions that the ultrasonic sensor’s beam and range constrain its coverage, so placement matters. These project components and sequence are an educational example, not a validated full-size safety design or a universal sizing recipe.

What the parts do
- Activation sensor: requests that the door open. In the example, that is a PIR sensor.
- Controller and motor driver: implement the motion logic and switch motor power. The example uses an ESP32 and L298N.
- Motor and belt drive: translate rotation into the model panel’s sliding movement.
- Limit switches and timeout: identify travel endpoints and provide a way to stop motion if the expected sequence does not complete.
- Obstacle sensor: signals a potential obstruction during closing. Its actual detection area is limited by sensor characteristics and placement.
Why an approach sensor is not a safety system
A sensor that detects someone approaching answers “should the door open?” It does not necessarily answer “is the closing path clear?” Those are separate functions. Projectech’s model includes a separate ultrasonic sensor for obstacle detection, but the page itself notes coverage limits. Do not treat a PIR sensor, ultrasonic module, current measurement or limit switch by itself as proof that a full-size door is safe.
Commercial operator descriptions distinguish activation inputs from safety and protection inputs. Kenwa lists activation and threshold-protection signals, emergency stop, panic-open and side-screen safety inputs among its system features; it also identifies sensor options from BEA and Optex. OlideSmart says its SD190 reverses on an obstacle and lists microwave sensors in the kit. These are vendor descriptions of their own equipment, not independent validation of a custom combination or a guarantee for a particular installation. See Kenwa America’s automatic sliding door operator information and OlideSmart’s SD190 product page.

What a full-size operator system includes
A real operator is more than a motor. The drive must work with the door’s rail, hangers and travel, while the controller coordinates activation, motion and safety inputs. Mounting geometry, wiring, power, environmental conditions and service access also matter.
Examples of integrated equipment
- Kenwa EDM-MD: Kenwa describes a controller, brushless motor and gearbox, toothed belt and pulleys, brackets, rail and hangers, along with control and protection inputs and optional monitoring equipment. The company lists configurations and model-specific operating specifications.
- OlideSmart SD190: OlideSmart lists a control panel, receiver, motor-gearbox assembly, microwave sensors, toothed belt, return pulley, end stops, hanger brackets, remote controls, and aluminum rail and cover. Its obstacle-reversal statement is the manufacturer’s claim.
- Propel system: Propel describes a drive system, side cinchers and lower door guide, and advertises internal obstacle detection and photocell safety sensors. This is the company’s stated architecture, not a universal design prescription. See Propel Sliding Door Automation.

For any option, establish the door’s single- or double-leaf arrangement, width, weight, travel and condition of its existing track and hangers. Then check what the kit supplies: rail, belt, brackets, controller, activation sensors, safety devices, remote or access interface, and power requirements. Confirm how it behaves during a power loss, what emergency functions are available, and whether its sensing and monitoring match the intended use. The cited listings do not determine which building or safety requirements apply at an unspecified site.
Build or buy?
For a small demonstration, building from individual parts is a practical way to learn the mechanism and control sequence. For a full-size door, an automatic sliding door operator kit is a more relevant starting point than sourcing a hobby motor, sensor and belt independently—but a kit is not automatically suitable just because its advertised capacity appears sufficient. It must match the door and be installed as an appropriate system.

The cited sources provide a model project and manufacturer descriptions of particular operator systems. They do not establish a universal bill of materials, a motor-sizing method, safe force or speed values for a custom occupied door, or the rules that apply in every jurisdiction. Kenwa’s or another manufacturer’s compliance statement, where made for a named product or configuration, should not be generalized to a homemade installation or treated as proof of compliance at a different site.
