You can make a useful bug hotel from untreated timber, hollow stems, logs, leaves, stones, or a sturdy reclaimed crate. The right design depends on which creatures you want to shelter: a mixed bug hotel offers possible refuge to several kinds of invertebrates, while a bee hotel is specifically for cavity-nesting solitary bees. Many other solitary bees nest in soil, and a hotel cannot guarantee occupancy or a measurable increase in biodiversity.
Here are five beginner-friendly projects, from a drilled bee block to a simple ground-level refuge. These are practical build ideas, not a tested ranking. Choose based on your space, materials, target wildlife, and willingness to maintain the structure.
What can you make a bug hotel from?
Use suitable natural or reclaimed materials, matched to the conditions each compartment needs. Untreated wood is appropriate for frames and drilled blocks; hollow stems, logs, bark, dry leaves, stones, bricks, pots, and roof tiles can provide nesting spaces or shelter. A roof or other rain cover helps protect the contents, and stable construction prevents the structure from toppling.
Keep dry, sunny bee-nesting cavities separate from cool, shaded, damp materials intended for other shelter-seeking invertebrates. Recommendations vary with the target wildlife and region: some UK mixed-hotel guides include materials such as pinecones or dry grass, while ACT Government’s native-bee-focused design advises against them. Follow local guidance rather than treating one recipe as universal. Woodland Trust’s bug hotel guide and ACT Government’s insect hotel guidance describe different approaches.

How to make a bee hotel
Bee hotels serve cavity-nesting solitary bees, which use hollow stems or holes in wood. They do not serve all bees: many solitary bee species nest in soil. The RHS says Britain has more than 250 solitary bee species, though its current advice page does not state a year for that figure. RHS: Bees in your garden
The Wildlife Trusts notes, “Solitary bees are important pollinators and a gardener’s friend.” Its bee hotel guide recommends stems in a 2–10 mm diameter range, identifying 3–5 mm as preferred. ACT Government specifies 3–9 mm diameter and 15 cm length for its regional design. These are source-specific recommendations, not universal dimensions.

- Make tubes closed at the rear, or drill blind holes that stop inside the block; do not drill through the wood.
- Choose straight, hollow stems and cut them cleanly to fit.
- Use untreated timber and keep the nesting cavities sheltered from rain.
- Provide a warm, sunny spot for bee cavities. A compass direction should not be treated as universal: ACT Government recommends a north-east-facing position for its local design.
Five DIY bug hotel projects
1. Drilled-log bee block
Use a piece of untreated wood and drill smooth, blind holes in a range of suitable diameters. Stop each hole before it reaches the far side, and remove rough edges that could damage a bee’s wings. Keep the block modest in size so it is easy to inspect and maintain. This project is aimed at cavity-nesting bees rather than a broad range of garden creatures.
2. Framed hollow-stem bundle
Build a simple frame from untreated timber, cut straight hollow stems to fit, and pack them securely so they cannot slide out. Add a backing board to close the rear ends. Bramble, reed, and bamboo are among the stems listed by The Wildlife Trusts; its guidance gives a 2–10 mm diameter range, with 3–5 mm preferred. The Wildlife Trusts: How to make a bee hotel

3. Small pot or can stem hotel
For a compact version, pack cut hollow stems into a small pot or can, making sure the tubes are closed at the rear. Secure the container so it cannot roll or fall, then place it in a sheltered position. This adapts the documented container and stem methods into a small project; it is not a separate tested design.
4. Multi-compartment pallet or crate hotel
Use untreated pallets or a sturdy crate to create separate spaces for different materials. Fill compartments with options such as logs, bark, dry leaves, stones, pots, or stems. Keep damp, shaded material apart from dry, sunny bee cavities so the structure offers distinct conditions rather than one unsuitable mix. Add a roof and secure the frame against movement. Woodland Trust’s guide covers mixed-material bug hotels.

5. Low log, leaf, and stone refuge
For the simplest option, leave or arrange logs, leaves, stones, or roof tiles at ground level to create dark, damp crevices. This can offer shelter to a broader range of invertebrates than a bee-only nesting block. Keep the arrangement stable rather than stacking materials loosely, and choose a spot where it can remain undisturbed.

Place bee-nesting cavities somewhere warm, sunny, sheltered from rain, and away from frequent disturbance. The Woodland Trust advises choosing a quiet, sheltered area and, if possible, providing both shade and sun in the wider hotel. ACT Government’s suggested north-east-facing position and 1–2 m height apply to its regional design, not every garden or bee species. Woodland Trust · ACT Government

If your project also includes damp, shaded refuge, provide it in a separate part of the structure or elsewhere in the garden. The goal is to offer different conditions, not to expose all materials to the same sun and moisture.
How to build it safely and keep it in good condition
- Select sound materials. Use untreated timber where wood is needed, and choose sturdy reclaimed pieces without loose or unstable parts.
- Cut and assemble securely. Make stems fit closely, close nesting tubes at the rear, and add a backing board where appropriate. Secure the frame and any roof so the structure cannot topple.
- Use tools with care. Adult help is appropriate for sawing, drilling, and securing heavier structures. The RHS school gardening guide also highlights adult supervision for construction. RHS Campaign for School Gardening: Make a bug hotel
- Inspect without disturbing occupied nests. The Wildlife Trusts advises cleaning a bee hotel yearly to remove fungal growth, debris, and parasites. UF/IFAS advises replacing pollinator-hotel materials every two to three years to help limit parasites and disease. These are distinct recommendations; avoid disturbing occupied nests and use local wildlife guidance when deciding when to maintain the structure. The Wildlife Trusts · University of Florida IFAS Extension
What else helps garden wildlife?
A hotel is only one optional habitat feature. Bees also need food, and other invertebrates need suitable shelter beyond a constructed box. Grow flowers that provide pollen and nectar over a long season, and do not rely heavily on double or highly bred flowers that may offer little of either. Broader garden habitat matters more than any single structure. RHS: Encourage wildlife to your garden
