Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYes—but treat $1,000 as a budget some past DIY builders achieved, not a reliable price for a new build today. Make: reported spending about $850 on its 2016 project, and Mother Earth News describes a separate build costing roughly $700. Both accounts depended on affordable cedar; the Make: builders also reused a stove. Your result will depend on local lumber prices, available secondhand equipment, tools you already own, and the needs of your site.
What the under-$1,000 builds actually involved
The Make: project produced a tub about 5 feet in diameter and 3 feet deep. Its authors described the work as hard and estimated more than 16 hours. That is a project estimate, not a guarantee for another builder: lumber selection, precise joinery, heater installation, and troubleshooting can all affect the schedule.
The Make: builders reported that their particular tub and stove heated water from 65°F to 102°F in less than two hours. This is their account of one setup, not a performance promise for a different tub, heater, fill temperature, or weather condition. The central cost lesson is similar: an old project’s total does not establish a current local bill of materials.
Why clear cedar and precise joints matter
The project uses a stave-style cedar vessel. Its builders said finding affordable clear cedar was the hardest part. They bought lower-grade stock and, with permission, sorted through it for clear sections. They avoided knots in structural pieces because knots can create weak points and contribute to leaks. Mother Earth News likewise describes avoiding knots in the staves and floor.

The Make: design joins the staves with bead-and-cove, or canoe-style, edges. Those cuts need to fit accurately around the tub; the project warns that inexact joinery can keep the vessel from holding water. The article describes using a table saw and crosscut saw for cutting, plus a router and joinery bits. If you lack the tools or the skill to make consistent cuts, include borrowing, renting, or paying for help in your budget rather than assuming the project materials are the whole cost.
How the documented tub was assembled
Start by choosing the tub size and calculating the lumber requirements before buying stock. The Make: builders sized their stave cuts to their lumber and the circumference of their tub, so their dimensions should not be treated as a universal cut list.
Floor and structure
The featured project used 1×6 tongue-and-groove cedar for the floor because that stock was available to the builders; they said 2×6 boards would have been easier if available. The floor was supported by cedar joists. Mother Earth News also describes a 1×6 tongue-and-groove floor, while recommending knot-free 2×6 boards for its own approach. These are project-specific construction choices, not a general engineering specification for every tub or site.

Holding bands and drainage
The Make: tub was held by three lengths of 3/16-inch vinyl-coated cable with stainless turnbuckles. The authors note that the wood expands as it takes on water, so the bands must accommodate that movement. Do not assume those dimensions or hardware are suitable for a different tub; follow a plan appropriate to your design and materials.
For drainage, the builders fitted a push-style bathtub floor drain, pipe, garden-hose connection, and a ball-valve backup. They reported that the primary drain leaked, a useful reminder to check fittings during filling and to choose components appropriate for the installation. The article does not establish one drain assembly as universally suitable.
Choose and install a heater by its own instructions
The featured Make: build used a secondhand stove and its supplied 6-foot stovepipe, which the builders secured against buoyancy. Its authors also mention an external wood heater, propane, and electric systems as alternatives. The accounts do not provide comparable current prices or performance figures for these options, so compare them based on equipment availability, fuel or power access, installation complexity, freeze protection, and manufacturer support—not on an assumed cheapest or most efficient choice.

Heater plumbing and fire precautions are model-specific. For example, the Zen Bathworks cedar-tub manual, version 5.1.23 (2023), gives instructions for a Chofu wood-fired heater. In that setup, thermosiphon circulation sends heated water upward through the upper pipe and cooler water back through the lower pipe. The manual specifies that the upper pipe rise toward the tub by at least 2 inches per foot, calls for a stable noncombustible base such as cement, tile, stone, or metal, and says the Chofu needs at least 8 feet of stovepipe for optimum draft. These details apply to the specified heater and setup; use the current manual for the model you select.
The same manual warns that a heater left full in freezing conditions can be damaged in less than a day in some circumstances, and says to drain it when not in use in freezing weather. It also cautions against overtightening fittings as the tub wood swells. Check local fire and building requirements before installation or operation; the cited projects do not establish local permit, clearance, or foundation rules.

Expect the first fill to reveal leaks
The Make: builders said their tub leaked heavily for three days before the wood swelled enough to help seal it. They applied marine-grade clear caulk because they were unsure about their joinery, while noting they did not know whether it was necessary. Mother Earth News also describes leakage while its tub swelled and says those builders caulked the interior to speed sealing. These are two project experiences, not a universal leak timeline or a substitute for sound joinery and correctly installed fittings.

Fill and inspect in a controlled way, checking the tub and connections as the water level rises. The Zen Bathworks manual distinguishes small drips from trickles or runs that may indicate improper installation; use the instructions for your own tub and heater when deciding what to correct. Do not assume that a significant leak will resolve itself after a set number of days.

Building a heater and filling the tub are only part of operating it. The CDC’s hot-tub guidance, updated May 20, 2025, says water temperature should not exceed 104°F (40°C). It recommends checking disinfectant and pH with test strips: chlorine should be at least 3 ppm, bromine 4–8 ppm, and pH 7.0–7.8. Follow current local requirements and the instructions for the sanitation products you use.
Hot tubs can produce mist, and breathing mist containing Legionella can expose people to respiratory illness. CDC’s Legionella control guidance, dated January 3, 2025, identifies disinfectant residual, pH, sediment and biofilm, temperature, and water age as relevant control factors, and recommends vigorous surface scrubbing whenever a tub is drained. Heating the water does not replace testing, sanitation, cleaning, and appropriate water replacement.

Mother Earth News describes one build using generator-powered filtration, a biguanide sanitizer, and full water changes every three to four months. That is a report about that setup, not a general treatment schedule; select a compatible maintenance approach and follow public-health guidance and product instructions.
Is this a practical project for your budget?
The historical examples show that a sub-$1,000 result is possible when cedar and equipment are sourced cheaply, but they do not establish what a complete build costs now in your area. Before committing, price the material grade and dimensions your design needs, decide whether you can make accurate stave joints, and account for the heater, drain hardware, tools, and site-specific requirements. If a new heater, purchased tools, or locally priced clear cedar push the total above budget, the old reported totals are not a reason to compromise on structural work or safe installation.
