A slide potentiometer linked to the moving insert reports its position, letting a microcontroller track the actuator’s travel. It is a low-cost DIY mechanism, not a commercially rated actuator.
How the glue-stick actuator works
A linear actuator is “a mechanism that pulls or pushes a load along a straight line,” as project author Andrew Terranova puts it. In this build, the glue stick’s internal screw converts the servo’s rotation into straight-line movement of a PVC piston. A linear slide potentiometer follows the moving insert and supplies position feedback to the servo circuit.
The design is an adaptation of Terranova’s Make: project, published May 7, 2015 (the page also shows October 14, 2015): Build This Inexpensive Linear Actuator from a Glue Stick. Fit and wiring may need adjustment for parts other than the examples in that project.
Parts and tools
Materials
- One large glue stick; the project specifies a body about 4 1/4 inches high, excluding its cap.
- One hobby servo. The GWS S03N 2BB is the project’s example, not a verified current recommendation.
- One linear slide potentiometer. Use a linear, not logarithmic, potentiometer.
- About four inches of 1/2-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe.
- Three wires in different colors, each about eight inches long.
- Two-part epoxy and tape.
Tools
- Rotary cutting tool with cutting disk, drill, and center punch.
- Soldering iron and solder, saw, wire cutter/stripper, and utility knife.
- Straight edge or square and a fine-point marker.
Build the actuator
- Open and clean the glue stick. Disassemble it, remove any remaining glue, and clean the body and moving insert.
- Cut the body slot. Make a lengthwise slot wide enough for the potentiometer slider and long enough for the moving insert’s full travel.
- Drill the slider hole. Move the insert near the bottom and mark where the potentiometer slider will connect. Drill a snug hole without going through the insert. The example potentiometer uses a 13/64-inch hole, but the required size depends on the slider.
- Fit the servo horn to the glue-stick knob. Trim the knob down to its base, center a round servo horn on it, and bond the horn with two-part epoxy. Allow the epoxy to cure according to its directions.
- Modify the servo. Remove the gear’s rotation stop and the servo’s original potentiometer. Solder three wires to the original potentiometer board connections, preserving which connection is the center one. Servo designs differ; consult instructions for the specific model rather than assuming the example’s arrangement applies.
- Wire the slide potentiometer for feedback. Connect the three wires to the slide potentiometer, with the servo board’s center connection going to the slide potentiometer’s wiper. Use a microcontroller to identify and mark the slider’s zero- and 180-degree ends, as in the project, so its feedback range is oriented correctly.
- Add the PVC piston. Press-fit a roughly four-inch piece of 1/2-inch Schedule 40 PVC into the moving insert, keeping the drilled slider hole clear. A press fit may be enough for pushing or lifting. If the application must pull through the piston, epoxy may be needed to secure that connection.
- Assemble and test. Pass the potentiometer slider through the body slot into the insert. Temporarily tape the potentiometer in place, attach the servo, and test the motion and feedback. Then secure the servo and glue-stick body so they cannot rotate relative to each other.
What the reported lift does—and does not—show
Make: describes the completed mechanism as surprisingly accurate and strong and reports that the author lifted a six-pound exercise ball. That is the project author’s demonstration, not an independent test, repeatable capacity measurement, or manufacturer load rating. The article explains the screw mechanism’s mechanical advantage qualitatively but does not provide a rated load or controlled performance comparison.

- Key Specifications: Stroke Length: 30 inch (760mm); Travel Speed: 0.35 in/s (9mm/s); Retracted Length: 34.84" (885mm); Extended Length: 64.84" (1645mm); Input Voltage: AC100-240V; Duty Cycle: 25%. Efficiency is at its highest when the actuation force is approximately 75% of its maximum value.
For construction or shop use, treat the build as an experimental mechanism: the source does not establish a safe working load, durability, or suitability for a particular application. A pulling setup also needs a secure attachment for the load, not just a bonded piston.

Fit and wiring details that matter
- Choose a linear slide potentiometer and size the insert hole to its slider; 13/64 inch applies only to the project’s example part.
- Keep the slider aligned through the body slot throughout the full travel, and keep the PVC piston from obstructing its hole.
- Preserve the servo board’s center connection and connect that wire to the slide potentiometer’s wiper. Incorrect feedback wiring can prevent the servo circuit from sensing position as intended.
- Secure the servo and glue-stick body against relative rotation; otherwise the servo can turn the housing instead of driving the mechanism.
- Expect to adapt dimensions and wiring if using a different servo or potentiometer. The example parts and photos correspond to the model described by the author.
