You can build a minimalist chair with plywood for its seat and backrest, but the plan detailed here uses solid 2×2 lumber for the frame—not plywood alone. It is a beginner-labeled Ana White design with a 16-by-16-inch plywood seat, a 16-by-7 3/4-inch plywood backrest, screws and glue. Follow its cut list as a single design; other chair plans use different panel dimensions and should not be combined with it.
Choose a plan and understand what “out of plywood” means
The most direct match is Ana White’s Homemade Modern Chairs. It uses 3/4-inch plywood or a pine project panel for the seat and backrest, with a frame made from 2×2 lumber. The plan is labeled beginner by its publisher; that is not a standardized skill rating.
Two other Ana White plans offer different ways to use a panel. The Modern Angle Chair uses an 18-by-18-inch, 3/4-inch-thick seat and is labeled advanced by its publisher. The Squared2 Chair allows a 19-by-19-inch, 3/4-inch plywood seat. These are alternatives, not dimensions to combine with the Homemade Modern cut list.

- 3/4-inch plywood or a 24-by-16-inch pine project panel for the specified seat and backrest panels.
- Two 8-foot 2×2 boards for the frame.
- Thirty 2 1/2-inch screws and fifteen 2-inch screws.
- Wood glue, wood filler and paint.
The plan lists a measuring tape, square, safety glasses, hearing protection, pocket-hole jig, drill, compound miter saw and sander. Check the plan’s complete cut list and instructions before buying or cutting materials, since the listed panel dimensions and lumber are tied to that design.
Build the frame and attach the panels
- Make two matching sides. Use the plan’s measurements to cut the 2×2 frame pieces, then assemble each side with glue and 2 1/2-inch screws. Keep the sides aligned as you fasten them.
- Connect the sides. Join them with the front apron according to the plan. It also describes an optional second support level.
- Install the seat. Place the 16-by-16-inch plywood seat on the aprons. Check that the chair sits level before fastening the seat with glue and screws.
- Build the back and attach its panel. Assemble the back frame using the plan’s dimensions, then fasten the 16-by-7 3/4-inch plywood backrest.
The sequence and dimensions above are for Homemade Modern Chairs; use that plan’s diagrams and complete instructions for the frame cuts and their exact placement.

Joinery without a pocket-hole jig
A pocket-hole jig is not essential for every plan. The Modern Angle instructions say you can predrill and countersink screws instead, then add corner bracing cut from scrap 1×3 pieces. Predrilling helps reduce the risk of splitting; countersinking lets screw heads sit below the surface. Follow the selected plan’s fastening locations and do not substitute this method into another design without checking its instructions.
Keep cuts accurate and the chair square
Chairs can be difficult to keep square, and a frame that is out of alignment can affect how the chair sits and how its parts meet. The Squared2 plan specifically warns about squareness and strength, and advises against making a chair a first project. Treat the frame as structural work: measure carefully, use a square, and compare matching parts before assembly.

- Wear safety glasses and hearing protection, as the plans specify.
- For saw work, Ana White’s Modern Angle guidance recommends a sharp blade, supporting and clamping boards, marking the waste side, accounting for blade kerf, cutting slowly and practicing on scrap.
- Check that both side assemblies match and that the frame sits evenly before attaching the seat.
The plans do not provide a tested load rating or engineering validation. Do not assume a particular weight capacity from the dimensions or materials alone.

For the Homemade Modern design, sand with the grain and remove dust before finishing. Follow the chosen finish manufacturer’s instructions for surface preparation, application, drying, curing and safety; products differ, so there is no universal schedule that applies to every paint or finish.
