Decide who will use it and what format they need, check ground and drainage conditions, then design the base, finish, markings, and goal as one coordinated project. Court dimensions, drainage details, permits, and construction specifications depend on the format and location, so there is no single design or price that fits every site.
1. Decide what kind of basketball the court needs to support
Start by defining the players, activities, and level of play. A full court, 3×3 court, half-court, and casual practice area have different space and equipment needs. Those choices affect the layout, painted lines, clearances, goal position, and whether an adjustable basket would be useful.
Choose a format and check its footprint

Do not measure only the painted lines. Allow room for players to move beyond the playing area and for people to reach the court. Trees, fences, walls, parked vehicles, utility equipment, and neighboring property can affect whether a proposed footprint is usable.
Match the court to the players
For youth play, USA Basketball and the NBA publish age-segmented recommendations. Their guidance recommends a 50 ft by 42 ft court and an 8 ft basket for ages 7–8, and a 74 ft by 50 ft court and a 9 ft basket for ages 9–11. These are youth competition recommendations, not universal requirements for a home court or every youth program. The organizations also note that parents and coaches frequently ask, “How high should we set the basket?” and “What size ball should we use?” Check the current guidance for the intended age group and program before setting the goal or purchasing equipment.

2. Check the site before choosing a surface
A court plan has to work with the ground, the surrounding property, and the way construction crews can reach the site. Walk the proposed area and document the conditions before settling on a finish or requesting bids.
Review the project area
- Space and obstructions: Confirm the playing footprint, outside clearance, access routes, and any nearby trees, structures, fences, or overhead obstructions.
- Ground and drainage: Note low areas, standing water, runoff paths, and any known soil instability. Soil bearing, drainage capacity, and the right engineered section cannot be determined from a generic guide.
- Construction access: Check how equipment, materials, and debris can get to and from the site. Restricted access can affect the construction approach.
- Utilities and other site features: Identify known utilities and coordinate their locations with the court, goal foundations, lighting, fencing, and drainage work.
- Local requirements: Ask the local planning or building authority whether permits, setbacks, drainage review, or other approvals apply. Requirements vary by location.
Bring in a qualified local contractor or appropriate design professional when grading, soil conditions, drainage, structural support, utility conflicts, or local rules need site-specific judgment. The Wisconsin Asphalt Pavement Association’s 2022 Game Court Design Guide covers grading, subgrade preparation, asphalt materials and mix design, construction, repair, renovation, and care; it is a useful asphalt-construction framework, not a substitute for local engineering.

3. Design drainage together with the base
Water management affects the playing surface and the ground supporting it. FIBA’s Outdoor courts & facilities guide describes vertical drainage through the sub-base and horizontal drainage through pipes or channels, and advises diverting water from surrounding areas. A site plan should account for where water arrives, where it can move through or away from the court system, and where it ultimately goes.
FIBA states: “Basketball court flooring must be perfectly flat, therefore ‘crowns’ or ‘envelopes’ to facilitate drainage are not permitted.” In the same outdoor venue guidance, it says a slight slope of up to 1% across a single plane may be incorporated when sufficient surface drainage is not possible. That figure is conditional FIBA guidance, not a universal construction specification. The appropriate grading and drainage design depends on the site, surface, and applicable requirements; have those details reviewed by a qualified professional.

4. Choose a compatible base and playing surface
The sub-base and finish work as a system. Consider drainage, ground conditions, local climate, construction access, the level of play, and the surface manufacturer’s requirements together. A material that suits one site may not suit another.
Compare possible sub-bases

Compare outdoor finish systems
FIBA describes permeable polypropylene tile flooring and synthetic rubber flooring as outdoor surface options. Its venue guidance also says outdoor-approved surfaces undergo testing that includes UV weathering, wet slip resistance, dimensional stability, and infiltration. Before choosing a product, verify that it is intended for outdoor use, that the specific product’s approval is current if approval matters to the project, and that its installation requirements match the prepared base.

Compare product documentation rather than relying on a surface name alone. Ask for the exact system specification, installation requirements, applicable test or approval information, and written maintenance instructions for the product being proposed.

Plan the basket before construction begins. FIBA says backstop units with backboards and hoops are required at minimum. It describes fixed units bolted to concrete anchor blocks, with the distance between the support and backboard depending on competition level. Adjustable units can accommodate children and wheelchair users.

Set the goal location and identify its foundation, sleeves, and any lighting or fencing before the base and surface are installed. The support and anchoring need to suit the selected unit and site; do not assume that a goal foundation detail from a different product or project will transfer. Include room for the goal support and safe access when laying out the court.
FIBA recommends padding on the backboard and unit and regular checks for deterioration. When choosing between fixed and adjustable equipment, weigh the intended users, competition needs, anchoring and support layout, and the ability to inspect and maintain the unit.
6. Get a site-specific scope and compare proposals
The sources do not establish a comparable residential court cost average. A project estimate depends on its location and actual scope, including site preparation, drainage, base and finish system, equipment, access, and any required approvals. Get itemized proposals based on the same proposed layout and surface system so that differences between bids are visible.
Ask each contractor or installer to identify the proposed dimensions and clearances, site preparation, drainage approach, base and finish materials, goal and foundation, included ancillary work, and maintenance requirements. Have any unresolved soil, drainage, grading, or structural questions addressed before construction specifications are finalized. Vendor specifications should not be treated as universal: for example, DunkStar’s concrete information applies to courts using its suspended surfacing and cautions that expansive or unstable soil, water, and climate conditions may require engineered specifications.

7. Plan routine care for the chosen surface
FIBA recommends removing debris promptly and identifies a leaf blower, sweeping brush, or pressure washer as possible cleaning equipment. It also says tile surfaces should be lifted annually for a deep cleaning of compacted debris. These are general venue-guide recommendations, not instructions that override the actual flooring manufacturer’s directions. Confirm which tools and cleaning methods are suitable for the installed product; do not assume pressure washing is appropriate for every surface.
