The best Dungeon Master screen is the one that puts the references you actually need within easy view, suits your game’s rules, and works at your table. You can start with an edition-specific ready-made screen, add removable inserts to a screen you already own, or build a modular version from frames and basic woodworking materials. There is no single proven “ultimate” layout for every DM.
Choose the right approach for your table
Decide first whether you need an off-the-shelf reference, a changeable surface, or a custom-built structure. A permanent woodworking project is not the only route: printed pages and clips can help you test a layout before you commit to it.
| Approach | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-made screen | A finished physical screen with references designed for a stated game or edition. The D&D Beyond Marketplace listing for the D&D Dungeon Master’s Screen (5.5e) describes a four-panel screen with revised interior references intended for use with the fifth-edition Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide. See the official listing. | Check the stated edition and game fit; do not assume the references suit another ruleset or that the screen is customizable. The listing displayed $19.99 when observed; price and availability may change. |
| Customize an existing screen | Removable printed pages, clips, foam board, or papers attached to an existing screen are lower-effort options mentioned in a D&D Beyond forum discussion. See the discussion. | Useful when you want to try different references without designing and building a permanent screen. These are community suggestions, not tested construction specifications. |
| Build a custom screen | A published individual project demonstrates a frame-and-insert design using picture frames, wood, hinges, magnets, and general woodworking supplies. See the project. | It is one creator’s design, not a standard plan or universal materials list. Adapt dimensions and construction to your own table and tools. |
Decide what belongs on the inside
Start with the information you personally look up during play, not a generic checklist. Choose references that you can read quickly from your normal seat and that match your ruleset. The available sources do not establish a universally best set of tables, panel count, or interior arrangement.
- Which rules or reminders do you actually look up during a session?
- What do you already remember well enough that it does not need screen space?
- Does the screen need to serve one game or edition, or should it accept replaceable pages for different systems or campaigns?
- Can you scan the text at a glance from your usual position at the table?
For a first pass, attach a few printed references to an existing screen and see whether they are legible and useful during play. Change the pages as needed before deciding on a permanent insert layout.

Plan the physical design around the table
Before choosing a construction method, decide which physical constraint matters most. Portability, stability, display space, and ease of changing inserts can point toward different designs. A screen that stays set up in one place may have different needs from one that is regularly packed away.
- Portability: Consider how easily the screen can be carried and stored.
- Stability: Think about whether the screen will remain upright on the surface where you play.
- Display space: Choose a width and layout that fit your table without blocking more of the play area than you want.
- Replaceable inserts: If you change games, editions, or campaigns, favor a method that makes pages easy to swap.
Build a custom screen with frames and inserts
One published DIY example uses four picture frames, wood, hinges, magnets, and general woodworking supplies to create a modular screen. Treat it as inspiration rather than a cut list: the project describes one creator’s approach, and it does not establish universal dimensions or material quantities.

- HIDES DOCUMENTS AND SECRETS - Our DM board is a great and cool way to keep your information away from prying eyes, but to allow your necessary accessories to look like they belong in a fantasy world. It's the physical representation of the separation of the Players and the Dungeon Master.
- PREMIUM LEATHER ARTWORK - This GM screen designed and crafted from senior faux leather, and embossed with eye-catching artwork. You can get mimic, dragon, and other cool art on the outside. The vintage embossment adds depth and excitement to the screen for DMs holding it and will increase immersion during game night!
- FOUR-PANEL WITH POCKETS - The DM screen is like a binder pocket in design. It has 4 panels with 4 sheet pockets (perfectly fit for A4 paper) so you could put any inserts or NPC sheets on the inside. All of the pockets are wet-erase marker compatible, so you can write down notes and erase them before your next session.
- PERFECT SIZE FOR GAME MASTER - Built for DMs on the go, this D&D screen folds down to 9" x 12" by 0.5" to fit inside your bag with room to spare. It stands 12" tall by 36" long with four panels, which large enough to hide several books from view, to keep your schemes and machination hidden from prying players.
- IDEAL GIFT FOR DM - Treat yourself to a faux leather Dungeon Master screen with beautiful art for accommodating all of your game-guiding skills. These make great gifts and/or bribes for any game master to show appreciation for their hard work.
- Set the requirements. Choose the number and approximate size of panels based on your table, storage needs, and the references you want to display.
- Decide how pages will be held. A frame-and-insert approach can keep reference sheets replaceable; the cited project uses magnets as part of its design.
- Plan the connections. The project uses hinges to join panels. Arrange them so the screen can stand in the shape you need and fold for storage.
- Mock up the references. Check that the pages are readable from your seat before making the layout permanent.
- Build to your own dimensions and tools. The published project is a single example, not a tested specification for every table or builder.
Try a reversible version before committing
If you are unsure what references or layout you need, attach printed pages to a screen you already own or arrange them on foam board with clips. This lets you assess readability and usefulness at the table before investing time in a framed, hinged build. These options come from informal community discussion, so treat them as starting points rather than validated designs.

The D&D Dungeon Master’s Screen (5.5e) listing identifies its intended use with the fifth-edition Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide, and says its interior references have been revised. That makes it a specific ready-made option for D&D readers—not evidence that it fits every edition or ruleset. If your table uses another game, a different edition, or campaign-specific procedures, check the references closely or use replaceable pages tailored to your sessions.
