Broad Sustainable Building reported assembling its 15-story New Ark Hotel in Changsha, China, in about six days in 2010. That was a rapid on-site construction milestone—not the full project lifecycle: the foundation was already complete, and major components had been manufactured in advance.
What was built, and where?
The project was Broad Sustainable Building’s New Ark Hotel, near Broad Group’s headquarters in Changsha, Hunan. The Los Angeles Times later described it as Broad Sustainable Building’s first project and reported that it was built in 2010 in about six days. Los Angeles Times (2012)
China Economic Review’s contemporary account also described a 15-story hotel in Changsha and attributed it to Broad Sustainable Building. It noted that the foundation was already in place before the short construction window began. China Economic Review (November 14, 2010)
What did “six days” measure?
The reported figure refers to the fast on-site construction and enclosure milestone, not every phase required to deliver a hotel. It does not include the earlier foundation work or establish how long design, approvals, factory production, interior fit-out, or commissioning took.

China Economic Review broke the schedule into two reported intervals:
- 46 hours: building the hotel’s main structure using prefabricated columns and modules.
- A further 90 hours: completing the building enclosure after the main structural components were in place.
These are reported project milestones, not independently audited time measurements. The OECD’s 2013 report also records the six-day hotel as a Broad Group prefabricated-building case, corroborating that the project was widely documented without serving as an engineering or inspection record. How prefabrication made the schedule possible
The short site schedule depended on shifting substantial work away from the construction site. Reporting describes factory-made structural components and modules assembled on site. The Los Angeles Times described Broad’s “main boards” as 13 by 50 feet, with ventilation shafts, water pipes, electrical wiring, and lighting integrated between ready-made floors and ceilings. Los Angeles Times (2012)
In practical terms, a compact assembly window can coexist with a much longer project timeline: factory manufacture and integration happen before the modules arrive, while foundation work is completed separately. The reported six days therefore describe the visible site milestone, not the total labor or elapsed time invested in the building.

How the hotel compares with Broad’s next project
The Los Angeles Times reported that Broad’s subsequent 30-story hotel took 15 days, compared with about six days for the 15-story New Ark Hotel. These are reported durations for two different projects, not a controlled comparison of construction methods or productivity. Los Angeles Times (2012)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the reports do—and do not—establish
The available accounts document a reported schedule and a prefabricated construction method. They do not provide a like-for-like conventional construction baseline, independent safety or seismic test results, or independently verified figures for cost savings, energy performance, or construction waste. Claims about earthquake resistance, soundproofing, thermal insulation, energy, or material savings should therefore be treated as claims requiring technical evidence, not as conclusions proved by the six-day schedule.

Project planner Rong Shengli, quoted by the Los Angeles Times in 2012, called it “the tallest building in this county, and it’s also the fastest-built.” That is his attributed description of the project, not an independently established benchmark. Los Angeles Times (2012)
