The separate claim that workers were instructed to take it down and objected comes from an anonymous worker quoted in secondary reporting, and has not been independently confirmed.
What did Gary Neville say?
In a LinkedIn video posted on 3 October 2025, former England footballer and property developer Gary Neville said he had seen around 50–60 Union Jack flags while driving to Salford City. That figure was his estimate, not an independently counted total.
Neville said: “Funnily enough, from one of my development sites last week, there was a Union Jack flag put up and I took it down instantly.” He added: “The Union Jack flag being used in a negative fashion is not right.” These are his own words in the video transcript: Neville’s LinkedIn post.
The Guardian’s transcription gives his fuller explanation: “The union jack flag used in a negative fashion is not right and I’m a proud supporter of England, of Great Britain, of our country and will champion it anywhere in the world as one of the greatest places to live.” The wording is quoted in The Guardian’s 5 October 2025 report.

Did Neville order builders to remove it?
His LinkedIn video confirms that he said he took the flag down. It does not identify the development site, say who physically removed it, or establish how any instruction was given.
A separate report reproduces a Daily Mail story attributing the removal instruction and workers’ anger to an unnamed worker said to be at the St Michael’s site. The worker reportedly alleged that the Union Flag was singled out while other flags were left in place, and that workers objected. This account is anonymous and has not been independently corroborated by Neville’s post or the established reporting cited here. The report says it sought comment from Neville, Relentless and Domis Construction; it does not establish a response. See the secondary report.

Why did Neville take the flag down?
Neville said he believed the flag was being used “in a negative fashion.” He also described himself as patriotic. The available evidence supports that as his stated reason; it does not establish the intentions of the person who put up the flag or the meaning of every flag displayed in the area.
The video was posted on 3 October 2025, the day after the Manchester synagogue attack. That timing is relevant context, but by itself does not prove that the attack caused Neville’s comments or the flag’s removal. BBC Sport’s 10 October report also records differing local views and political criticism of Neville’s remarks.

Why did people disagree about the flags?
The dispute was about interpretation and context. Neville objected to what he saw as a negative or divisive use of the Union Jack. Other people viewed flag displays as expressions of patriotism, while politicians criticized his comments. Those views do not show that every flag display had the same meaning.
Neville also said in the video that he had made 85 appearances for England. That was his own stated figure, rather than an independently verified count in the post.
