For a king-size comforter, Whirlpool says a washer of 4.5 cu. ft. or larger should typically be able to handle the job. That is a starting point—not a guarantee. A thick, heavy comforter may need more room than a thinner one, and it must fit loosely enough to move. Check the care label and your washer’s fit guidance before loading it.
What size washer do you need for a king-size comforter?
Whirlpool’s size guide recommends 4.5 cu. ft. or above as a typical capacity for king-size duvets and comforters. The same guidance notes that fabric weight and filling can affect whether an item is suitable for a household washer, so a commercial machine may be needed for some bedding. Whirlpool also describes a large-capacity washer as typically having at least 5.0 cu. ft. in its comforter-washing guide. These are two manufacturer rules of thumb, not conflicting guarantees: capacity screens for a likely fit, while the comforter’s construction and the washer’s usable space determine whether it can be washed safely.
Can you wash your comforter in your washer?
Use the washer only if the comforter’s care label allows machine washing and the item fits without being packed tightly. Fit depends on the washer configuration:

- Top-load washer: GE says the comforter should sit below the tub’s balance ring and should not be stuffed tightly into the tub. GE’s comforter fit guidance covers this criterion.
- Front-load washer: GE says the comforter should fit behind the door gasket without being stuffed tightly.
Thickness and density matter as much as stated dimensions: a fuller, heavier comforter can be harder to wash than a larger but thinner blanket. If you have to force it through the opening or compress it to close the door, use a larger commercial washer instead.
What to compare when choosing a washer for bulky bedding
- Usable fit: Check the opening and the manufacturer’s fit criteria for the washer type. The comforter needs room to move, not merely room to squeeze in.
- Capacity and construction: Compare cubic feet, but account for the comforter’s loft, filling, and fabric weight.
- Cycle support: Look for a Bulky, Bedding, or equivalent cycle appropriate for the care label. Whirlpool’s current top-load cycle guide describes Bulky Items for large items such as small comforters. In that guide, Whirlpool says: “This cycle uses a higher default water level than other cycles.” This describes the cycle in that specific guide, not every washer’s bulky-item setting. - Configuration and installation space: Consider front-load versus top-load access, exterior dimensions, and whether the machine must fit in a compact or stacked laundry area. GE cautions that space-saving and unitized models may not handle the largest bedding.
- Care requirements: Confirm that the comforter is washable and follow its label for temperature and drying instructions.

- Read the care label. Confirm that machine washing is allowed, and note temperature and drying instructions.
- Inspect the comforter. Check for damage that could worsen in the wash.
- Check the fit before starting. Place it loosely in the tub and apply the top-load balance-ring or front-load gasket guidance above. Do not tightly pack it.
- Choose the appropriate cycle. Follow the comforter’s label and washer manual; use a Bulky, Bedding, or delicate cycle as appropriate for the item and machine.
- Follow drying directions. Use the care label and appliance instructions to choose the drying method and temperature.
Whirlpool’s loading guidance emphasizes leaving room for the comforter to agitate or tumble. If it cannot move freely, or its care instructions call for commercial equipment, take it to a laundromat with a larger washer. See Whirlpool’s comforter-washing guidance.
