These functions are designed for bread in a way that a general air-fry mode may not be. The examples below show how features and stated capacities differ, but the available evidence does not establish one model as the universal best air fryer for toast.
Can an air fryer make toast?
Yes—some air fryers can make toast, particularly countertop oven-style models with a dedicated toast program. The evidence here applies to air fryer toaster ovens; it does not establish that basket-style air fryers toast reliably. If making toast is the priority, look for a purpose-built setting rather than assuming that an air-fry function will produce the same result.
What to look for in an air fryer for toast
A dedicated toast setting
Hamilton Beach’s manual for the Sure-Crisp Air Fryer Toaster Oven 31460 says its TOAST mode is best for browning both sides of sliced bread. BROIL is intended for browning one side, making it useful for open-faced items. Hamilton Beach product use and care manual.
Adjustable shade and slice count
Check whether the controls let you choose a toast shade and the number of slices. GE’s support documentation describes both controls for its Digital Air Fry Toaster Oven and says its TOAST mode does not require preheating. Available settings and their ranges depend on the model. Usable capacity and counter space
Capacity claims help narrow the options, but slice counts alone do not tell you how well bread browns or how comfortably it fits. Breville’s official tutorial says the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro can toast nine slices of sandwich bread; Instant Pot lists six slices for its Omni 18L 7-in-1. Secondary cooking uses and cleanup
Compare the whole appliance, not just the toast setting: consider its other cooking modes, counter footprint, and how removable parts are cleaned. Extra modes do not, by themselves, establish toast quality. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 toaster-oven roundup compares capacity, dimensions, and cleaning attributes for reviewed models; its Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven listing gives a four-slice capacity. Use the appliance’s dedicated TOAST mode when it has one, and begin with the manual’s recommended slice and shade settings. Hamilton Beach notes that bread freshness and the number of slices affect the color: in its guidance, four slices may need a darker setting than two. If the result is too light or dark, adjust the shade in small increments for the next batch rather than treating one setting as universal.

Do not assume a universal temperature or cooking time. Dedicated toast programs can use appliance-specific cycles and controls; for example, GE’s documented mode uses slice count and shade and does not require preheating.
For open-faced sandwiches, baguettes, or crostini
Hamilton Beach says BROIL can brown the top of open-faced items. Its manual also advises that bread can be flipped once the desired browning is reached. Follow the appliance manual for rack placement and operation.

How to choose the right model
- Confirm the design and setting. Prefer an oven-style model with a dedicated TOAST mode if toast is a regular use.
- Check the controls. Look for shade selection and slice-count options, then consult the manual for how those controls work.
- Match capacity to your household. Treat stated slice counts as model-specific capacity claims, not ratings of browning quality.
- Measure your space. Check the appliance’s dimensions and usable rack layout before buying.
- Weigh other uses and cleanup. Compare secondary cooking modes and cleaning needs only after confirming the toast features you want.
- Separate claims from test evidence. Manufacturer specifications describe features and capacity; a reviewer’s toast result applies to the tested model and conditions, not every air fryer toaster oven.
