The most dependable garden use for banana peels is adding them to compost and using the finished compost. Peels contain potassium, but a fresh peel or homemade peel water is not a proven, balanced fertilizer. The eight options below distinguish soil treatments from ways to process food scraps and one post-harvest fruit-ripening tip.

Which banana-peel uses are worth trying?

Use What it does Evidence and main consideration
Home compost Turns peels into finished compost for the garden Recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS); chopping speeds breakdown.
Worm farm Processes food scraps Listed by Brisbane City Council; no specific plant-growth benefit from banana peels is established.
Bokashi system Processes food scraps Listed by Brisbane City Council; it is a waste-processing route, not proof of fertilizer efficacy.
Community compost hub Diverts peels into shared composting Availability depends on local services; Brisbane documents local hubs.
Bury chopped peels in open soil Adds scraps directly to soil Maryland Extension describes this option, while Extension sources caution about slow decomposition, nitrogen use, and animals.
Bury small pieces under mulch or in a planting hole Places scraps near garden plants Suggested by the RHS, but direct burial is not the default recommendation because of the cautions above.
Soak peels in water Makes homemade peel water Not established as dependable fertilizer; nutrient availability and effectiveness are unproven.
Put peels with harvested green tomatoes or quinces in a paper bag Offers a post-harvest ripening tip Suggested by the RHS; it is not a soil treatment or a quantified trial result.

1. Add banana peels to a home compost pile or bin

This is the strongest-supported option. The RHS recommends composting banana peels, and says tearing or chopping them into smaller pieces speeds decomposition. Add them to an existing compost pile or bin, then wait until the material is mature before using it as a soil improver. A bin is optional if you already have a pile or can use a local composting service.

2. Put peels in a worm farm

Brisbane City Council lists worm farms as one way to process banana peels. Treat this as food-scrap management: the council’s suggestion does not establish that banana peels specifically produce a measurable growth benefit for plants. Follow the feeding guidance for your worm farm rather than adding large quantities at once.

3. Use a bokashi system

Bokashi is another food-scrap processing option listed by Brisbane City Council. It is not the same as applying fresh peel directly to a plant, and listing it as an option is not evidence that banana peels make a balanced fertilizer. Follow the system’s own directions for handling the resulting material.

4. Take peels to a community compost hub

If you do not compost at home, check whether your council, community garden, or local waste service accepts food scraps. Brisbane City Council documents community compost hubs, but services vary by location. Confirm that a nearby program accepts household food waste before carrying peels there.

5. Bury chopped pieces in an empty spot or between widely spaced plants

Maryland Extension says chopping and burying food scraps in an empty space or between widely spaced plants can make nutrients available more efficiently than soaking scraps in water. It also cautions that scraps alone probably will not supply enough fertilizer. This is a limited option, not a reliable way to feed a particular plant.

Direct burial has trade-offs: peels can take time to break down, decomposing material may temporarily use nitrogen, and exposed scraps can attract animals or pests. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and N.C. Cooperative Extension discuss these concerns. If they matter in your garden, compost the peels instead.

6. Bury small pieces under mulch or in a planting hole

The RHS suggests hiding small pieces beneath mulch or placing them in planting holes. This differs from the more cautious guidance from Extension sources about direct burial near established plants. If you try the RHS approach, use small pieces and avoid leaving peel exposed at the surface; choose composting instead if wildlife, pests, or possible nitrogen competition are concerns.

7. Treat banana-peel water as an unproven experiment, not fertilizer

Soaking peels in water is often described as a way to extract potassium, but the available guidance does not establish that the resulting water contains a useful, predictable fertilizer dose. In a 2020 Maryland Extension response, an Extension respondent said, “We don’t know of any scientific studies on using banana peels as a fertilizer.” The RHS describes soaking as a mild homemade feed, but that does not make it a dependable substitute for a fertilizer selected to meet a plant’s needs.

Peel water will not make plants drought-tolerant. Water deeply and regularly during hot, dry weather. One Ask Extension response from 2023 also warns against using the sugary mixture on indoor or potted plants. For nutrient decisions, test the soil rather than assuming a homemade treatment corrects a deficiency.

8. Put peels in a paper bag with harvested green tomatoes or quinces

The RHS suggests placing banana skins with harvested green tomatoes or quinces in a sealed brown paper bag to help ripen the fruit. This is a post-harvest handling tip, not a way to fertilize soil, and the RHS does not present it as a quantified trial result.

Do banana peels actually fertilize plants?

Peels contain potassium and other nutrients, but that fact alone does not show how much becomes available to a plant, whether the amount is useful, or whether the overall nutrient balance is appropriate. Maryland Extension says it knows of no supporting scientific studies for banana peels as fertilizer and recommends soil testing before adding nutrients. Its 2024 response says food scraps provide only small amounts of nutrients and that chopping and burying them or composting is more useful than relying on soaked-peel water.

For a soil amendment, finished compost is the more defensible choice: it processes the peels before they go into the garden. Use a soil test to guide any additional fertilizer, rather than treating peels, peel water, or scraps as a complete feeding plan.

What about peel powder, surface mulch, or pest spray?

Brisbane City Council also mentions drying peels for chips or powder, using them as surface mulch, and spraying peel water as a pest deterrent. Those suggestions do not establish that powder is a slow-release fertilizer or that peel spray controls aphids. Brisbane advises keeping surface peels away from stems and covering them with ordinary mulch to help reduce fruit flies. Because direct soil use can also raise decomposition and wildlife concerns, composting remains the safer general recommendation.
