For most routine manual cleaning of natural stone, start with a soft-bristle brush and a neutral cleaner made for the stone. There is no brush proven best for every stone or finish: softer stone can scratch, and the right tool depends on whether you are cleaning a broad surface, grout lines, or an outdoor area with a compatible powered cleaner.

What brush is safe for natural stone?

Choose a soft-bristle brush for general manual cleaning. Daltile recommends agitating stone with a sponge or soft-bristle brush, and Floor & Decor also lists a soft-bristle brush among its stone-cleaning tools. Daltile’s Natural Stone Care & Maintenance guidance explains: “Natural stone products are porous by nature and require a different maintenance program than traditional ceramic tile.”

Soft bristles are a starting point, not a guarantee of safety for every surface. Kärcher cautions that hard brushes can scratch softer stone, and stone types vary in hardness, acid and alkali sensitivity, and water absorption. Choose a brush shape that reaches the area without forcing you to press hard, and follow the care instructions for your specific stone and finish.

Can I use a brush to clean marble or limestone?

Yes, a brush can be used for suitable routine cleaning, provided its bristles and the cleaning method are appropriate for the particular stone and finish. Use a soft-bristle brush, a neutral cleaner formulated for stone, and the cleaner’s label directions. Marble and limestone are not interchangeable with every other stone, so do not assume a technique that works on one surface is safe for another.

#1 Best Overall
Marshalltown Beaver Tail Brush, 13 1/2 Inch, Concrete, Assembled in the USA
  • Quality Concrete Finish: MARSHALLTOWN horsehair brushes are ideal for achieving a quality finish on concrete curbs and other surfaces, a trusted masonry brush for pros and DIYers
  • Durable Bristles: black horsehair fiber bristles are staple set in a clear lacquered hardwood block, built to perform as a shop brush, bench brush, or dust brush on any jobsite
  • Standard Length: comes in a standard 13 1/2-inch length, sized right as a hand brush or fox tail brush for tight detail work
  • Ideal for brushing away loose mortar and finishing concrete curbs, and doubles as a hand broom brush around masonry tools and the shop
  • Made in USA: built in the USA with global materials, the horse hair brush design Marshalltown has trusted for generations

Before cleaning the full area, test the brush and cleaner in a small, inconspicuous spot. Avoid acids and bleach where the stone-care guidance prohibits them. Rinse as directed, avoid leaving standing liquid, and dry the surface. These steps help manage cleaning risks; brushing is not established as a way to repair etching, scratches, or dullness.

What bristle stiffness should I use on stone tile?

For broad manual cleaning, choose soft bristles. The available care guidance does not establish a universal ranking of bristle materials or specify one stiffness for every stone tile. Surface hardness and finish matter, so use the gentlest action that suits the task and avoid hard brushes on delicate or softer stone, including some sandstone and slate.

Masonry Brush, 14.2" Bench Brush, Foxtail Horsehair Shop Broom, Soft PET Fiber Bristle Counter Duster for Brick, Concrete, Mortar, Woodworking, Fireplace with Natural Wood Handle
  • SECURELY FIXED BRISTLES THAT WON'T SHED – Every tuft of our PET-and-natural-horsehair blend is strongly installed and locked deep into the solid hardwood stock, so you get clean, confident sweeps instead of a trail of loose hairs across your work. We engineered this brush against the single most common complaint about bench, counter and foxtail brushes: bristles that fall out on the first use.
  • PURPOSE-BUILT MASONRY & MORTAR BRUSH – Sweep away loose mortar, wet cement, brick dust and concrete crumbs for a crisp, professional finish on curbs, joints and brickwork. The dense, soft fibers do the real work of a mason brush, brick cleaning brush and concrete brush in one tool – a true alternative to the trade-standard beaver-tail masonry brush.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT NATURAL UNLACQUERED WOOD HANDLE – A raw hardwood stock with no varnish or lacquer gives a warm, grippy, genuinely natural feel that stays comfortable through long jobs. Light and well balanced, it keeps your wrist from tiring during repetitive finishing, dusting and clean-up.
  • ONE BRUSH FOR THE WHOLE WORKSHOP & HOME – Works as a shop brush, foxtail broom, counter duster, horse hair dust brush and large bench brush: woodworking sawdust, drafting tables, fireplace and wood-stove ash, garage and patio, car interiors, tile and grout, drywall dust, and gentle detail or archaeology dusting. Soft natural fiber lifts fine dust without scratching delicate or finished surfaces.
  • PRO-GRADE DURABILITY, BUILT TO LAST – The blended PET fiber adds the firmness and shape retention that pure horsehair lacks, so the brush keeps its form job after job, while the natural-fiber softness stays gentle on finishes. Tough enough for tradespeople and bricklayers, simple enough for everyday home use – a premium tool designed for years of service.

Use a stone-specific neutral cleaner and follow its directions. Daltile advises changing the cleaning solution every 100 square feet during heavy cleaning so dirty water is not redistributed; this is practical manufacturer guidance, not a measured performance result.

How do I clean grout without scratching the stone?

Use a narrow grout brush to focus agitation on the grout line rather than scrubbing broadly across the stone. Work carefully at the edge of the joint, check the adjacent surface as you go, and stop if you see scratching or a change in finish. A grout brush is a specialized tool, not a substitute for a soft brush across the full stone surface.

Can I use a power brush on sandstone or slate?

Only use a powered brush when the accessory maker specifies the exact machine and stone application. The UK RYOBI listing describes the RAC818 as a 115 mm gentle nylon brush for certain soft-stone uses, including sandstone and limestone, and lists compatibility with RY18PCA and RY18PCC patio cleaners. That is a specific outdoor accessory-and-machine pairing, not a general recommendation for indoor stone or all powered cleaners. Check the current listing and confirm the model compatibility in your market before use.

How to clean stone with a brush

  1. Identify the stone and finish. Check the stone supplier’s care guidance, particularly if the surface is soft, polished, or otherwise sensitive.
  2. Choose a suitable tool and cleaner. For manual surface work, start with soft bristles and a neutral cleaner formulated for the stone. Use a grout brush only for grout; use a powered accessory only with a machine and application explicitly listed as compatible.
  3. Test a small area. Apply the brush and cleaner in an inconspicuous spot before proceeding across the surface.
  4. Clean gently and follow the label. Avoid aggressive pressure, use the cleaner as directed, and avoid acids or bleach where the stone-care guidance prohibits them.
  5. Rinse and dry as directed. Do not leave standing liquid on the surface. During heavy cleaning, Daltile advises changing solution every 100 square feet to avoid reintroducing dirty water.

What a brush can—and cannot—do

A suitable brush can agitate soil during routine cleaning. The cited care guidance does not show that brushing restores etched, scratched, or dulled stone, and no comparative tests establish a universally best model. For damage or a persistent change in appearance, consult the stone supplier or a qualified stone-care professional rather than increasing brush stiffness or pressure.
