Bradford White Defender troubleshooting depends on the heater’s exact model, venting style and gas control. First record the full model number from the rating plate and use the lighting label and official manual for that unit; a flash pattern or repair step from another Defender model may not apply. If you smell gas, do not try to light the heater. Leave the area if there may be immediate danger and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.

Start with safety and identify your exact heater

Bradford White’s atmospheric Defender service manual is labeled for work “ONLY by qualified service providers.” It warns that failure to follow its instructions exactly may cause a fire or explosion, property damage, injury or death. Keep your checks to visible observations and steps allowed by the heater’s own lighting label. Do not open sealed combustion panels, test gas lines, adjust gas pressure or bypass a safety device.

  1. If you smell gas: Do not try to light any appliance. The gas-control manual directs you to contact the gas supplier from a neighbor’s telephone. If there may be immediate danger, leave the area and contact the gas utility or local emergency services from a safe location.
  2. Read the rating plate: Record the complete model and serial number, fuel type and venting type. Note the gas-control style and locate the heater’s lighting instruction label.
  3. Find the matching instructions: Use Bradford White’s technical documents index to locate the model-family manual and, where applicable, archived documents. Follow that unit’s instructions rather than a generic Defender code chart.

Defender covers multiple product families and control generations. The manuals do not establish which unit you own or diagnose a particular failure from the name “Defender” alone.

Why won’t my Bradford White water heater pilot light or stay lit?

For the atmospheric Defender covered by service manual 238-44943-00_A, Bradford White lists several possible causes when the pilot will not light: no or low incoming gas pressure, an incorrect gas-control knob position, not fully depressing the pilot button, a blocked or kinked pilot tube or orifice, electrode position or sparking problems, or a failed piezo igniter. If the pilot lights but will not stay lit, possible causes include a thermocouple connection or position problem, poor flame contact, a weak thermocouple, an open energy-cutoff circuit or a tripped resettable thermal switch.

These are possible causes from that manual, not a diagnosis for every Defender. If there is no gas smell or other hazard, you can confirm fuel is available where safe, check the visible control position against the lighting label, and follow that label exactly. Stop if the pilot fails to light, goes out again or the instructions do not match your heater. Internal pilot, thermocouple, wiring and gas-control work should be handled by a qualified provider.

Why is my Bradford White Defender not heating?

If the pilot is lit but the burner does not start, or the water is not hot enough, possible causes listed for the atmospheric Defender include a low temperature setting, a thermostat that is already satisfied, inadequate or inconsistent gas supply, restricted combustion air or venting, unusually high hot-water demand, cold inlet water, incorrect heater sizing, or a malfunctioning control or dip tube.

Use only the normal temperature adjustment described on your unit’s label or manual. Do not dismantle the heater or alter gas pressure. If the problem persists, or you see soot or suspect a vent or combustion-air restriction, stop using the heater if it appears unsafe and arrange qualified service.

What does the flashing light mean?

The light’s meaning depends on the gas control and model. For example, the ECO Defender Series V1 manual says its status codes repeat after a three-second pause; on that control, two flashes indicate a weak pilot signal and three indicate insufficient water heating. Bradford White’s updated Defender manual describes other patterns, including relay faults, soft lockouts, pilot issues and excessive temperature. Those codes are not interchangeable.

Count the flashes and pauses, then compare them with the diagnostic section of the manual that matches your exact control. A code can point to a condition that requires service; it does not by itself prove which component has failed. Bradford White’s technical documents index lists documentation by model family, and its video index groups some Defender Power Vent topics by safety-switch/airflow, water-temperature, pilot/gas-valve and flammable-vapor-sensing categories. The videos are professional-resource pointers, not homeowner repair instructions.

Choose the next step by symptom

What you observe Safe next step When to call a qualified provider
No pilot Only if there is no gas smell or other hazard, check visible control position and follow the exact lighting label. The pilot will not light after following the label, or the procedure does not match the heater.
Pilot lights, then goes out Do not keep relighting it repeatedly; note the symptom and any control light pattern. Any recurrence or suspected pilot, thermocouple, cutoff or control issue.
Pilot is lit but water is not heating Check the normal temperature setting and whether demand has been unusually high. The burner does not start, hot water remains inadequate, or combustion/venting may be abnormal.
Flashing light or repeated fault Record the flash count and pauses; consult the matching manual. The code identifies a control or safety condition, or the fault returns.

When a repair or replacement part is not a DIY fix

Call a qualified water-heater service provider for gas-pressure checks, combustion or vent work, internal burner or pilot work, gas-control or wiring diagnosis, opening sealed combustion doors, or recurring failures. Do not bypass safety devices or repeatedly reset the heater to suppress a fault. If the exact manual specifies a waiting or reset sequence, follow only that manual; there is no universal Defender reset time.

  • Note : This is a gas control valve and should be installed by a professional and not by homeowner as that potentially voids any warranty by not including professional installation.

  • This product is manufactured in China

A thermocouple is one possible cause of a pilot that will not stay lit on the atmospheric model covered by manual 238-44943-00_A, but that does not establish that it is the cause on your heater or identify a compatible replacement. Confirm the full model and control before any part is selected; Bradford White organizes its official documents by model family and retains archived documentation.

What Defender and FVIR mean

Bradford White describes the Defender Safety System as its flammable vapor ignition resistant (FVIR) system, designed to resist ignition of flammable vapors outside the heater. That feature is not a guarantee against every unsafe condition and is not a reason to ignore a gas smell, abnormal combustion, vent concern or recurring safety fault.
