They are industrial indicators—not lamps for illuminating a desk or room—and the right choice depends on the signals your team needs, the installation environment, and how the light will connect to equipment.
What a tower stack light does
A tower stack light, also called a signal tower or stack light, uses colored segments—and sometimes sound—to communicate the operating state of a machine, system, or process. Eaton describes its signal towers as devices that use light and sound to indicate operating states. The goal is to let people recognize a condition from a useful viewing position, not to light the surrounding workspace.
There is no independently established overall “best” model in the available product information. Manufacturers describe different products and specifications, so select by application rather than treating one series as a universal winner.
Decide what the signals need to communicate
Set the status states before choosing the number of tiers
List the conditions operators need to recognize, such as normal running, a warning, a fault, or a maintenance state. Then assign colors using your facility’s conventions and choose enough segments for those states. Color meanings are not universal: Maple Systems offers red for fault, amber for warning, green for running, blue for maintenance, and white for custom use as examples, not as a rule that every workplace must follow.

- These are Andon lights for use in factories or on industrial machinery. Typical uses are as Automated machinery status lights, operator signal lights, or as lean tower lights
Choose steady or flashing behavior deliberately
Maple Systems identifies steady and flashing modes, describing steady light as commonly used for normal operation and flashing for a higher-urgency or specific state. This is manufacturer guidance, not a formal universal standard. Define what each behavior means locally so that flashing does not create ambiguity.
Compare product architecture and examples
A modular tower lets buyers select or change modules; a preconfigured unit arrives in a ready-made arrangement. Compact, non-modular products can be simpler when a fixed configuration meets the need.

| Product family | Approach and documented options | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Eaton SL4/SL7 and SLC | Eaton describes SL4/SL7 as modular and SLC as compact and non-modular. Eaton lists 40 mm and 70 mm diameters, six lens colors, multiple mounting options, IP66, 360-degree visibility, and LEDs rated for up to 100,000 hours for the cited product information. | Confirm the exact series and configuration: the listed size, visibility, rating, and other features should not be assumed to apply to every variant. |
| Banner tower lights | Banner’s catalog includes differences in size, ingress rating, daylight visibility, audible output, modularity, RGB programmability, and control options. | Compare the exact model; range-level descriptions do not establish one specification for all Banner lights. |
| Maple Systems TL160 | Maple lists one-, two-, and three-tier lights with direct- or pole-mount variants and steady/flashing modes. Listed no-buzzer examples are IP65; buzzer-equipped variants are listed at IP54. TL160D2F-3 is a three-tier, direct-mount red/amber/green example. | Check the part number, mounting arrangement, and whether the buzzer variant’s rating suits the installation. |
| AUER Signal PC7/CT5 and preconfigured families | AUER Signal presents modular PC7/CT5 and preconfigured families as different approaches. It documents IO-Link options for specified PC7/CT5 bases and says CT5 operates on 24 V DC only. | Check the exact part-number configuration, voltage, base, and communication option. |
| Rockwell Automation Bulletin 855 | Rockwell’s page describes multiple sizes and options. It says the 855F 70 mm preassembled tower was discontinued effective June 30, 2021, and recommends Bulletin 856T as a functional replacement. | Check current catalog status and stock before considering either line; the cited page does not establish present availability. |
Check visibility, mounting, and the work environment
Consider where the tower will be installed, what blocks the line of sight, and where operators need to see it from. Product mounting choices may include direct or surface, pole, or wall mounting. Eaton cites 360-degree visibility for its signal towers; AUER Signal describes a wall-mounted HD design with a 180-degree beam angle. These are specific product claims, not guarantees for every tower light.
Match the exact model’s ingress protection and operating conditions to exposure at the installation, including dust, moisture, cleaning, and temperature. Eaton lists IP66 and an operating range of −30°C to +60°C for its SL series page. Banner’s comparison includes different model ratings, including IP50 and IP67 variants and IP65 families. Do not transfer a rating for one model or series to another configuration.
Decide whether an audible alert is useful
Some models are silent; others add a buzzer or other sound. An audible alert may help when a visual signal is unlikely to be noticed, but its usefulness depends on the workplace’s noise conditions and whether people can hear it, including when hearing protection is worn. Sound is not automatically necessary or safer in every installation.

Eaton lists a 100 dB audio signal for its series, while Maple Systems lists buzzer-equipped models with sound up to 85 dB. These are manufacturer product-page figures, not directly comparable measurements: the pages do not establish common measurement conditions.
Confirm voltage and control compatibility
Before specifying a tower, check its supply voltage and wiring or communications against the machine’s PLC or control panel. Banner’s range includes discrete and network-oriented control options. AUER Signal documents IO-Link base modules for specified PC7/CT5 families. These options are model- and configuration-specific; confirm the required interface and part number rather than assuming a family-wide feature.
A practical selection sequence
- List the conditions: Identify the machine or process states operators need to recognize.
- Set local conventions: Assign colors and decide whether any state should use a flashing signal.
- Choose the segment count: Select enough tiers to represent the defined states without adding signals that have no clear meaning.
- Decide on sound: Consider whether operators can see the light and whether an audible alert would be useful in the actual noise environment.
- Plan the mounting and sightlines: Choose a mounting style and position that suit the equipment and the people who must see the indicator.
- Check environmental exposure: Match the exact model’s ingress and operating ratings to dust, moisture, cleaning, and temperature at the location.
- Verify the controls: Confirm voltage, outputs, wiring, and any required network or IO-Link capability against the machine’s controls.
Verify the exact part before ordering
Product specifications and availability can change. Use the current manufacturer datasheet and exact part number to confirm configuration, electrical fit, mounting, environmental rating, and catalog status before purchase or installation. This is especially important for families with both modular and preconfigured variants and for products whose catalog status may have changed.
