For a hard-water ring, lime scale, mineral deposits, or rust, look for a toilet cleaner whose label names that stain; acidic cleaners are one manufacturer-recommended option for hard-water deposits. The products below are manufacturer-described choices, not a tested ranking, and the available evidence does not support a promise that any cleaner will remove stains permanently or keep them from returning.
Match the cleaner to the stain
A ring at the waterline is not, by itself, a reliable diagnosis of what caused it. If you suspect hard water, lime scale, mineral deposits, or rust, check that the product label specifically lists the stain you want to address. Clorox says hard-water stains such as lime scale and rust require an acidic cleaner with a pH below 7 (Clorox guidance on hard-water stains).
The options below are described by their manufacturers for one or more of these stains. The cited sources do not establish which works best across different bowls or water conditions.

How to use a bowl-specific cleaner
- Check the label first. Confirm that the product names the stain and that its precautions and compatibility guidance suit your bowl.
- Apply only the amount and way specified. Do not transfer one cleaner’s quantity or method to another formula.
- Scrub and wait only as directed. Use a toilet brush where the label calls for scrubbing, and observe any access or ventilation precautions.
- Flush as directed. If the stain remains, consult the product label before deciding whether to repeat use.
Do not mix cleaners or improvise dwell times. For example, Clorox’s Heavy Duty Stain & Ring Remover specifies a five-minute wait and says to keep children and pets away from the toilet during that period; those instructions apply to that product.
When CLR is a separate option
CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover is a multi-surface product, not one of the bowl-specific cleaners above. Its manufacturer lists toilet bowls as a use and recommends a 50/50 solution for hard-water stains in glass or porcelain bowls. Read and follow CLR’s directions and precautions; do not assume it is interchangeable with a toilet-bowl formula.

Why “best” and “permanently” need qualification
Consumer Reports’ cited toilet-cleaner testing does not evaluate stain or limescale removal: its method uses a proprietary mixture of sticky organic ingredients on porcelain plates, and the publication says, “Our testing doesn’t assess a cleaner’s ability to remove stains or limescale buildup.” See Consumer Reports’ 2026 toilet-cleaner testing, updated March 4, 2026. That test cannot establish which product removes hard-water rings, rust, or lime scale best.
The available product descriptions and directions also do not demonstrate permanent stain removal or prevention of a returning ring. Choose by the stain named on the label and follow that product’s instructions rather than treating any option as a guaranteed fix.
