For most air fryers, start with warm water, mild dish detergent and a soft sponge on the removable basket and pan. For stuck grease, soak those parts before considering a stronger cleaner. Keep cleaners and water away from the heating element unless your model’s manual specifically allows a method. There is no substantiated five-product ranking here; the useful choice is the gentlest method compatible with the surface you are cleaning.
Which air fryer cleaner should you use?
Use the cleaning method your appliance manual allows. Manufacturer guidance commonly starts with a soft sponge or cloth and mild detergent for removable parts. A soak can loosen stubborn residue; a liquid degreaser is an option for persistent fat on eligible removable parts when the appliance instructions and cleaner label permit it.
One named product in this category is HG Air Fryer Cleaner, sold in a 250 ml container according to its product instructions. The instructions exclude the heating element and appliance exterior. They also warn that results may be reduced on badly damaged parts or heavy carbonised fat. This is not a product performance test or a recommendation based on comparative testing.
How to clean an air fryer safely
- Unplug it and let it cool. Follow your model’s manual for cooling time and disassembly. Philips advises allowing its Airfryer to cool for about 30 minutes; Frigidaire says to unplug and wait until cool. Philips cleaning guidance and Frigidaire care guidance provide model-specific instructions.
- Remove the basket and pan. Empty crumbs and oil. Wash these parts by the method specified in your manual. Philips recommends hot water, washing-up liquid and a soft sponge; Bosch UK recommends mild detergent and a soft cloth or sponge. - Soak stuck-on residue before scrubbing. Philips recommends soaking stuck residue on its pan or basket for five to ten minutes. Bosch UK suggests soaking a greasy basket in hot water with a few drops of washing-up liquid. These are manufacturer-specific directions, not a universal soak time.
- Use a stronger degreaser only when permitted. Philips allows a more powerful liquid degreaser for persistent fat stains on its pan or basket, with the package directions followed. Use any cleaner only on surfaces its label allows. HG’s instructions specifically rule out the heater and exterior.
- Clean the heating element separately. Follow the appliance manual. Swan recommends a soft damp cloth or soft-bristled brush and says, “Do not pour or spray water directly onto the heating element.” Let the element dry completely before using the appliance. Philips also advises a soft sponge or soft-to-medium brush when needed, rather than steel wire or hard bristles. See Swan’s heating-element guidance.
- Dry and reassemble as your manual directs. Swan explicitly requires the heating element to be completely dry before use. Follow your own model’s instructions for drying other parts and reassembly.
Match the cleaning method to the surface

Tools and cleaners to avoid
Do not use abrasive pads, metal utensils or sharp tools on coated parts: Philips, Frigidaire and Bosch warn these can damage surfaces. Bosch UK also advises against alcohol or spirits in its cleaning guidance. Avoid hard-bristled brushes on the heating element; Philips recommends softer bristles instead. These cautions are especially relevant to coated baskets and pans, where scratching can damage the surface.
