A 5-quart All-Clad model is a documented option; for rice, quinoa and other small grains, choose a fine-mesh strainer instead of a standard perforated colander.
How to choose a stainless steel colander
Start with the food you drain most often, then check that the colander can sit securely in or over your sink without blocking the drain or tipping under the load.
- Match capacity to your batch. For large pasta or potato batches, Food Network recommends a colander close in size to the pot. Its guide also advises choosing a size based on what you cook most often. Food Network’s colander and strainer guide was updated February 5, 2026.
- Look for stability. A pedestal or other stable base can keep the bowl above standing water. Handles and overall height matter when lifting and draining a full colander.
- Check the holes against the food. Standard perforations work for many everyday tasks, but small grains can slip through. Choose fine mesh for rice, quinoa and similar foods.
- Consider storage and care. Nesting sizes can save cupboard space. Check the specific model’s care directions rather than assuming all stainless steel colanders have the same dishwasher guidance.
Which stainless steel colander is a good option?
All-Clad: documented 5-quart option
Food Network describes an All-Clad 5-quart stainless steel colander with a sturdy pedestal base, riveted handles and holes that become smaller toward the base. The publication says its observation about the hole pattern was borne out in its testing. It lists the model as dishwasher-safe and covered by a lifetime warranty against defects; check the product’s current terms before purchase. Food Network says it bought and tested 10 colanders and strainers, so its findings are that publication’s—not an independent test by this article’s author. See its review and product details.
All-Clad: multiple sizes for nesting
Good Housekeeping reports that All-Clad offers 1.5-, 3- and 5-quart colanders in 18/10 stainless steel, with top-rack dishwasher care. It says the three-piece set nests for storage. In Good Housekeeping’s testing, no orzo escaped through the holes. Those results apply to that publication’s testing; they are not a guarantee for every small food or batch. Tramontina: consider the exact set and model
Tramontina describes a three-size nesting set with stable bases, side handles and dishwasher-safe care. Its collection page says 3–5 quarts suit everyday cooking, while sizes of 8 quarts and up suit larger batches and entertaining. A separate care document for specified colander styles lists 1.25-, 2.5- and 4.5-quart capacities; those figures should not be treated as a complete list of every current Tramontina product. HENDI: specifications, but online ordering unavailable
HENDI lists stainless steel colander variants with diameters of 257, 310 and 363 mm, food-contact suitability and suitability for professional dishwashers. Its product page says online ordering is not currently available, so it is a specification reference rather than an immediately orderable recommendation. See HENDI’s product page.

Colander or fine-mesh strainer?
A perforated colander is suited to draining larger foods such as pasta and potatoes and rinsing produce. Fine mesh is the better-supported choice when you need to retain rice, quinoa or other small particles. Tramontina likewise distinguishes freestanding colanders with larger holes from finer mesh for rice and small foods. If you regularly prepare both kinds of food, a colander and a separate fine-mesh strainer serve different jobs; one does not automatically replace the other. - Hand-wash before first use, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Do not leave very salty or acidic foods, including tomatoes, in the colander for long periods; the manufacturer warns this may cause superficial pitting.
- Although the covered products are dishwasher-safe, hand-dry them after the rinse cycle to reduce water spots.
- Do not use them on the stovetop or in an oven or microwave.
These directions apply to the products covered by Tramontina’s use-and-care document, not every stainless steel colander.
