A holiday tree skirt is a fabric covering placed around a Christmas tree’s base. It hides the stand, frames gifts, and can catch some fallen needles or sap from a fresh-cut tree. To choose one, measure the stand and the tree’s lowest branch spread, then pick a skirt wide enough to cover the base without becoming a tripping hazard.
How to choose the right size
Start with the assembled stand’s footprint and the spread of the lowest branches—not tree height alone. The skirt should usually reach about 4–6 inches beyond the lowest branches, while still fitting the space available for gifts and nearby furniture. If unsure between two sizes, the slightly larger option is more likely to conceal the stand, as long as its edge does not create a trip hazard.

These ranges overlap because trees and stands vary in width. As a second check, Balsam Hill recommends a skirt at least 6 inches wider than the tree’s full width. Retailer category guidance also points to 36-inch skirts for compact setups, 48-inch skirts for many standard home trees, and 56-inch skirts for fuller trees or wider stands. Treat these as starting points, and check the actual skirt diameter against your tree and room.
Skirt or tree collar?
A skirt is soft fabric that opens around the trunk and lies on the floor. It is easy to fold away and comes in many colors and patterns. A tree collar is a rigid or semi-rigid ring or basket-like cover, commonly made from wood, metal, wicker, or woven material. It stays in place and gives the base a more built-in appearance, but offers less fabric-style variety.

- Choose a skirt if you want softness, easy storage, or a particular color, texture, or pattern.
- Choose a collar if you prefer a structured look and a cover that is less likely to shift.
- For a real tree, keep the water reservoir accessible whichever style you use.
- For pets or young children, consider a stable collar or a weighted skirt to help limit shifting.
Materials, construction, and appearance
Common options include polyester, burlap, velvet, satin, felt, cotton, fur, cable knit, and woven natural fibers. Red, green, plaid, white, silver, and gold are familiar choices; snowflake, snowman, reindeer, and other themed designs are also available. Match the material and finish to the room, but consider how the skirt will be used: a backing, lining, or bound edge can be more durable than raw-cut felt.
