Find and remove the source first; ventilation and filtration can help, but they cannot substitute for fixing the cause.
1. Leaving food scraps and trash sitting around
Food residue on counters, scraps in an open bin, and garbage that sits for days can create persistent kitchen odors. Store food and waste in containers pests cannot get into, clean food-contact and dining surfaces promptly, and use a securely lidded garbage can. EPA office guidance recommends emptying trash daily to help prevent odors and biological contamination.
Make taking out the trash part of the daily kitchen reset, especially if it contains food scraps. Rinse or clean the bin when spills or residue remain.
2. Ignoring drains and standing-water trays
A sour or musty smell may come from a floor drain, or from water trays in appliances such as refrigerators and dehumidifiers. Residue and standing water in these damp places can support odor-producing biological growth.

- Clean floor drains regularly, following the drain or product manufacturer’s directions.
- Check appliance water trays and empty and clean them frequently.
- If an odor persists, look for a leak or water that is collecting where it should not.
3. Letting bathroom moisture linger after a shower
A bathroom that remains damp after showering is more likely to develop mold and a musty smell. Use an exhaust fan that vents outdoors or open a window during and after a shower when outdoor conditions permit. Keep indoor relative humidity around 30–50% when feasible and below 60%, the range EPA recommends to help control moisture.
A digital hygrometer can help you monitor humidity, but it does not remove moisture. If the room stays damp despite ventilation, check for leaks and make sure the fan is working and actually exhausts outdoors.

4. Leaving laundry damp or failing to vent the dryer outdoors
Wet towels, clothes, and other textiles can develop a sour smell when they sit before drying. Dry wet laundry promptly, and do not leave damp loads in the washer. If fabrics smell bad after washing, check for items left in the machine and ensure laundry dries fully.
Check that the clothes dryer vents outdoors. Water-damaged carpet and other wet materials need to be dried promptly or removed; covering up the smell will not address the moisture source.

5. Letting pet waste, dander, and tracked dirt accumulate
Pet waste, dander, and dirt tracked indoors can all contribute to indoor odors. Remove pet waste promptly, clean regularly, and reduce what comes in on shoes and paws.
- Use doormats at entrances and clean them before they become a source of odor themselves.
- Wipe pets’ feet when they come inside, especially in wet or muddy weather.
- Clean surfaces and soft furnishings regularly, and address accidents promptly.
6. Covering odors with fragrance—or mixing cleaners
Air fresheners and strong fragrances can add another odor without removing the source. EPA warns that strong fragrances can trigger negative symptoms, particularly for people with allergies, asthma, or other pre-existing conditions. Find and remove the cause before considering fragrance.

Never mix cleaning products. Ventilate before, during, and after cleaning, and follow the product label. Combining cleaners can create hazardous fumes.

Use this order to narrow down the problem: remove the likely source, ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow, then consider filtration as a supplement. EPA says eliminating or reducing pollution sources is usually the most effective way to improve indoor air. Exhaust fans that vent outdoors can help remove moisture and pollutants; opening windows is appropriate only when outdoor air quality and weather make it safe.

A portable air purifier may help reduce some airborne particles, depending on its design and the room, but EPA says air cleaners cannot remove all pollutants. Filtration does not fix a leak, dirty drain, trash odor, mold, or pet waste. If you compare units, look at room coverage, noise, replacement-filter cost, particle and odor media, energy use, and independent certification.
Do not treat a persistent odor as merely a housekeeping problem if you see mold, suspect a leak, or smell sewage. Those signs call for finding the building or plumbing problem, and professional assessment may be appropriate. Unexplained health symptoms alongside an indoor odor also warrant prompt attention.
