Knighthead announced private investment plans for the mixed-use regeneration project; government backing includes support for regeneration as a policy goal, while a separate regional transport funding package includes the East Birmingham Metro extension. Jobs and growth figures are projections, not achieved results.
What is the Birmingham Sports Quarter?
The Sports Quarter is a proposed mixed-use regeneration area in East Birmingham centred on a new Birmingham City stadium. Plans described by the UK government include sports and training facilities, an academy, community pitches, leisure, commercial and residential development. The stadium capacity and the projected benefits have changed between announcements, so figures need to be read with their publication date and source.

In the government’s 5 February 2025 announcement, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy called the venture an example of sport acting as a driver for regeneration and growth. Knighthead co-founder and Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner said the company intended to pursue growth opportunities in Birmingham and the West Midlands. These are statements of intent and support, not independent confirmation of the project’s eventual impact.
What does the government boost mean?
The phrase combines distinct kinds of backing. Knighthead’s announced investment is private; the government releases frame the project as a regeneration and growth opportunity; and the West Midlands has a broader transport funding package that includes the East Birmingham Metro extension. The available sources do not identify the £2.4 billion transport package as a direct grant to the stadium or Sports Quarter.

- Inspired by the world's largest soccer matchup, the adidas FIFA World Cup 26 soccer ball pairs design with performance. A seamless TSBE surface enhances touch. The butyl bladder ensures consistent shape retention for every match or practice session.
- TSBE TECHNOLOGY: Seamless surface for better touch and lower water uptake
- KEEPS ITS SHAPE: Butyl bladder for best air retention
- REQUIRES INFLATION: Ships flat, pump not included
- FIFA QUALITY AND OFFICIALLY LICENSED: Officially licensed by FIFA, the ball passed FIFA tests on circumference, weight, rebound and water absorption
The West Midlands Combined Authority’s East Birmingham Metro page says the extension is being built and that funding was made available as part of a £2.4 billion government boost to the regional transport network. It describes a planned connection to the Sports Quarter alongside longer-term route ambitions. That is relevant transport investment, but it should not be conflated with funding for Knighthead’s project.
How have investment, jobs and growth estimates changed?
The announcements use different measures: investment plans, projected employment and estimated economic growth. None of the cited figures is a measured result. The table keeps the dates, publishers and categories separate.

| Publication and source | Investment or development figure | Jobs estimate | Growth estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 February 2025, Department for Business and Trade and Department for Culture, Media and Sport (government release) | Knighthead announced £100 million invested; the release described plans for a 60,000-seat stadium and associated development. | 8,400 projected jobs; the release does not specify in the cited figure whether these are construction roles, ongoing roles or full-time equivalents. | £370 million in estimated growth each year. |
| 21 October 2025, Department for Business and Trade (government release) | Knighthead plans to invest at least £3 billion in the Sports Quarter; the release cited a 62,000-capacity stadium. | 14,000 projected jobs, up from an earlier 10,000 projection cited in that release; the cited figure does not specify a jobs category. | £700 million projected boost to regional growth. |
| Project website, current vision page accessed in 2026 (Sports Quarter vision) | Not stated on the cited page as a comparable investment figure. | 27,200 construction jobs and 14,400 full-time-equivalent jobs after completion. The project says job numbers may change as the masterplan evolves. | Not stated on the cited page as a comparable growth figure. |
The February 2025 government release’s £100 million figure describes Knighthead’s announced investment at that point; the October release reports plans for at least £3 billion. They are not the same measure or announcement. Likewise, the project website separates temporary construction employment from full-time-equivalent jobs after completion, while the government releases use broader job estimates. They should not be added together or presented as one guaranteed total.

The regional transport authority says the East Birmingham Metro extension is being built and describes a planned connection to the Sports Quarter. Its page also refers to longer-term route plans, which are distinct from the extension currently described as under construction. The cited material does not establish the latest planning approvals for the Sports Quarter, a construction timetable for the stadium, or an opening date. Renderings and investment announcements do not settle those questions.
