Water thoroughly during active growth, then let the potting mix dry somewhat before watering again. A mature plant in strong light is more likely to flower; extra fertilizer cannot make up for insufficient light or immaturity.
How do I care for a bird of paradise plant?
This guide covers Strelitzia reginae, the species known for orange and blue flowers. White or giant bird of paradise, Strelitzia nicolai, is a different species, so its size and care should not be assumed to match this profile. The North Carolina State Extension profile describes S. reginae as a warm-climate plant suited to bright conditions.
| Growing condition | Indoors | Outdoors |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Choose the brightest sunny location available. Poor indoor light can limit flowering. | Partial shade is tolerated, but acclimate a houseplant gradually when moving it into stronger sun. |
| Water and drainage | Use a pot with drainage; water during active growth and let the mix dry somewhat between waterings. | Use well-drained soil and account for local rainfall and drainage; avoid leaving roots waterlogged. |
| Seasonal conditions | Keep warm. North Carolina State Extension describes moderate night temperatures of 55ā65°F for indoor culture. | Protect from frost. Cold tolerance depends on the conditions and duration of exposure, so do not treat a landscape recommendation as a universal safe temperature. |
Light and placement
Give the plant as much bright light as your space allows, ideally a very bright, sunny indoor spot. If you take it outside for summer, increase its exposure gradually rather than placing it immediately in intense sun; the University of WisconsināMadison Extension notes the importance of acclimating plants to outdoor conditions.
Soil, pot, and temperature
Choose fertile, well-draining soil outdoors or a well-draining indoor potting mix in a container with drainage holes. Keep the plant warm and protect it from frost. Repot when roots have outgrown or cracked the container, but avoid disturbing an established plant without a reason. Wisconsin Extension notes that plants may flower more freely when pot-bound, so moving a mature plant into a much larger pot is not necessarily helpful.

Fertilizer and seasonal care
Extension recommendations vary with growing conditions. North Carolina State Extension advises regular feeding in spring and summer and drier conditions in winter; Wisconsin Extension gives more frequent feeding guidance in its seasonal houseplant recommendations. Follow the product label and adjust to the plant’s growth and available light rather than treating any schedule as universal. More fertilizer is not a substitute for bright light or maturity.
How often should I water it?
There is no reliable fixed interval for every bird of paradise: pot size, light, temperature, and season all change how quickly the mix dries. During active growth, water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry somewhat before watering again. The goal is neither a persistently soggy mix nor prolonged drought.

- Check the potting mix before watering instead of following a calendar alone.
- Water less often in darker, cooler winter conditions, when growth and drying typically slow.
- Make sure excess water can leave the pot; poor drainage and overwatering can contribute to root rot.
For outdoor plants, rainfall and the drainage of the planting site matter as much as the watering routine. The University of Florida gardening guidance addresses landscape culture in Florida; its climate-specific recommendations should not be read as a frost threshold for other regions.
Why is my bird of paradise not flowering?
The most useful checks are the plant’s maturity and light. A seed-grown plant can take years to flower, and an indoor plant that does not receive abundant light may remain healthy-looking without blooming. A crowded or pot-bound root system can support flowering, so repotting into a substantially larger container is not a dependable way to induce flowers.

- It is still young: Seed-grown plants may need several years to reach flowering maturity.
- Light is limited: Move an indoor plant to a brighter location if possible, making seasonal outdoor transitions gradually.
- It has been disturbed or conditions changed: Division and repotting can delay flowering while the plant re-establishes.
Flowering timelines are estimates, not promises for a particular plant. Wisconsin Extension reports that seed-grown plants may take 4 to 7 years to begin blooming; Clemson Cooperative Extension gives a broader estimate of 4 to 10 years or more.
How can I propagate bird of paradise?
For an established clump, division is the practical way to make another plant. Divide carefully and expect the new section to need time to establish before flowering again. Seed is slower and requires patience: Wisconsin Extension says germination may take up to 8 weeks or longer, and Clemson Extension estimates 4 to 10 years or more from seed to flowering. These are source-specific horticultural estimates, not guarantees.

What pests and problems should I watch for?
Inspect leaves and stems regularly for mealybugs, scale, and spider mites, which can affect indoor plants. The UC Integrated Pest Management guidance also covers pests and diseases affecting landscape plants. If leaves look dusty, wipe them gently; Wisconsin Extension cautions against leaf-shine products, which can damage their natural matte finish.
Yellowing, declining growth, or persistently wet soil can point to a drainage or watering problem. Check that the container drains freely and that the mix is not staying waterlogged before increasing water or fertilizer.
