The best walk-in closet shelving is the system that fits your measured space and the clothes, shoes, and accessories you actually need to store. Measure first, then compare mounting style, adjustability, shelf space, and hanging capacity. No single system is a proven winner for every closet.
Measure your closet before choosing shelving
Record the usable height, width, and depth—not just the room’s overall dimensions. IKEA advises measuring all three dimensions before selecting a wardrobe or storage system. Check for recesses, sloped ceilings, pipes, radiators, trim, and door clearance; these can reduce the space available for shelves or interfere with doors and drawers.
- Width: Measure each wall section where shelving could go, including between obstructions.
- Depth: Check the clear distance from the wall to the door swing or other obstruction.
- Height: Note ceiling height and any slopes or fixtures that limit tall units.
For a specific IKEA configuration, use the dimensions on the current product page for your market. IKEA’s US guide provides example dimensions for BOAXEL and ELVARLI, but those examples are not a substitute for checking the exact combination you plan to install. IKEA’s clothes-storage guide also recommends estimating capacity around your clothing mix.
Plan around what you need to store
Before comparing systems, list the items that will live in the closet: hanging clothes, folded garments, shoes, bags, and accessories. The balance matters. A closet used mostly for hanging clothes needs rod space; one with many folded items or shoes benefits from more shelf area. Leave room to reach and use the storage rather than filling every available inch with fixed components.

Compare mounting and configuration
Open closet systems differ in how they are supported and arranged. IKEA describes BOAXEL as a wall-mounted system, while ELVARLI can use ceiling posts or side units. That distinction matters when deciding how to use a wall, accommodate a particular layout, or avoid placing a full-height structure against every surface. Check the installation requirements and the dimensions of the exact configuration before selecting either system.

Decide between adjustable and fixed storage
Adjustable shelves and rods can be repositioned as storage needs change. Rubbermaid describes its expandable kit as modular, but the included parts depend on the specific kit. Check the parts list rather than assuming every listing has the same components. For IKEA systems, compare the available pieces and dimensions for the precise setup you want; the cited guidance does not establish a universal configuration or a cross-brand load-capacity comparison.

Match the system to your closet
- Choose a kit when its stated fit matches your measured space. The Rubbermaid 4–8 ft Deluxe version is an example for closets within its stated width range and at least 14 in deep.
