If you want dishwasher detergent without fragrance, look for a product explicitly labeled fragrance-free—not merely “unscented.” The terms are not interchangeable: EPA says unscented products may use chemicals to mask or neutralize odors, while fragrance-free products do not use fragrance materials or masking scents. One documented option is Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dishwasher Detergent Gel, which its manufacturer identifies as fragrance free and EPA Safer Choice certified. The available sources support label-based comparison, not a tested ranking of the best-performing detergent.
What “fragrance-free” means—and why “unscented” is different
For someone seeking a fragrance-free dishwasher detergent, the wording on the label matters. EPA’s October 2016 fact sheet explains that fragrance-free products do not use fragrance materials or masking scents. An “unscented” product, by contrast, may contain chemicals that neutralize or mask the odors of other ingredients. Read the explanation in EPA’s “Fragrance-Free vs. Unscented” fact sheet.
That distinction makes “fragrance-free dishwasher detergent” a more useful search and label criterion than “unscented dishwasher detergent” if your aim is to avoid fragrance materials. The word “unscented” alone does not establish that a product contains no masking scent or fragrance materials.
What EPA’s Fragrance-Free Safer Choice designation adds
EPA’s Fragrance-Free designation is an additional label for products that qualify for the Safer Choice label or Design for the Environment (DfE) logo. EPA says it reviews products bearing the designation to confirm they contain no fragrance materials; the Safer Choice Standard also disallows chemicals with dual functionality that includes use as a fragrance in products carrying the fragrance-free designation. See EPA’s Safer Choice Standard, which identifies the August 2024 standard.

Safer Choice is a voluntary program. EPA says it reviews ingredients and requires labeled products to perform comparably to conventional products. That program-level requirement is not an independent head-to-head test or a ranking of dishwasher detergents; it does not establish that one certified detergent cleans better than another. More about the program is available on EPA’s Safer Choice page.

How to compare fragrance-free dishwasher detergents
- Check the exact claim. Prefer an explicit “fragrance-free” statement if avoiding fragrance materials is your goal. Do not treat “unscented” as equivalent.
- Look for EPA’s designation. If a product claims the Fragrance-Free Safer Choice designation, check that the designation appears on the current product information or package. The label represents EPA’s program review, not a ranking against other products.
- Review the ingredient disclosure. Use the manufacturer’s current ingredient information alongside the label, especially if you need to assess particular ingredients.
- Match the product form and directions to your use. Products may differ in form; follow the directions on the specific detergent’s label and use a product intended for an automatic dishwasher.
What the label can—and cannot—tell you
A fragrance-free claim or EPA designation can help you screen for products without fragrance materials under the relevant label criteria. It cannot establish that a detergent will prevent every reaction or meet every person’s medical needs. If you have a specific sensitivity, check the current ingredient disclosure and consult an appropriate clinician when needed.
