Water-vapor fireplaces create a flame-like display by lighting fine water mist; they do not burn wood or gas. The best fit depends less on a universal “most realistic” ranking—which the available evidence cannot establish—and more on opening size, viewing direction, water supply, installation requirements and whether you want supplemental heat. Current Dimplex examples include compact, linear and multi-sided built-in models, with different refill and plumbing arrangements.
How a water-vapor fireplace creates its flame effect
Dimplex describes its Optimyst effect as ultrasonic technology turning water into fine mist that reflects LED light, creating the appearance of moving flames and smoke. In practical terms, the visible “flame” is cool mist illuminated by LEDs. A heater, where included, is a separate electric function. The display can therefore be used without heat on models that support flame-only operation; check the exact model’s controls and documentation.

These Dimplex models illustrate the key differences in size, sightline and water supply. They are examples, not a ranked list or an exhaustive survey of brands and markets. Choose the model around the installation
Match the opening and sightline
Measure the planned opening and decide which sides need to show the effect before choosing a width. The documented examples range from the 30-inch Aura to the 46-, 66- and 86-inch Linear sizes, while e-MatriX listings include front, left, right and bay views. Verify the precise dimensions, framing details and clearances in the installation manual for the selected model and market; product width alone does not establish the required rough opening.
Decide between a refill tank and a water line
A refillable tank avoids a permanent water connection but means someone must replenish it. The Aura uses a pull-out tank, and the Linear offers either a tank or continuous water-line approach. The e-MatriX connects to a main water line. Plumbing access, service access and the intended location should therefore be considered before framing or finishing the wall.

Check ventilation, electrical access and service space
Installation details are model-specific. For e-MatriX, Dimplex specifies a minimum 40-square-inch fresh-air intake area below the fireplace. Do not treat that value as a general requirement for other water-vapor units. Confirm ventilation, electrical supply, framing and access requirements from the exact installation instructions before construction begins.
Does it need a water line?
Not always. The Optimyst Linear can use a manual tank or a continuous water-line connection, and the Aura uses a refill tank. The e-MatriX is documented as a main-water-line model. Does a water-vapor fireplace produce heat?
The mist effect itself is not a fuel fire. Heating is a separate electric function and varies by model. Dimplex lists optional supplemental heat for the Linear and Aura. Dimplex UK says applicable Optimyst models use a separate 2 kW fan heater; that specification is not evidence that every model or regional version has the same heater. What upkeep does it require?
Plan for refilling and water quality
Dimplex UK says most models run for about 8–10 hours per full tank. This is manufacturer guidance for the UK range, not a guaranteed runtime for every model or setting. Its UK FAQ recommends filtered or deionised water to help prevent limescale. A separate UK stove manual says to use filtered tap water, so the instructions are not identical across the cited materials. Clean and store it as the manual directs
The cited UK stove manual calls for weekly cleaning of specified components, particularly in hard-water areas. It also instructs owners to drain the sump and tank before moving the stove or leaving it unused for more than a week, and not to move or tilt it while water remains in those parts. The cited Optimyst flame effect does not burn fuel, so it does not create combustion gases that need a flue. That does not remove the need to follow the selected product’s installation requirements: a built-in unit may still require specified ventilation, electrical access and clearances. What “zero emissions” means—and what it does not
For these products, “zero emissions” is best understood narrowly: the cited water-mist flame effect does not combust wood or gas and therefore produces no on-site combustion emissions. The reviewed manufacturer materials do not establish zero emissions over the product’s lifecycle, emissions associated with electricity generation, or a quantified climate advantage over another fireplace. No carbon figure or comparative emissions result is available here.
Likewise, a cool-mist flame effect does not make every installation or operating condition risk-free. A separate heater produces heat and has its own operating requirements. The UK stove manual warns against obstructing the heater outlet because a thermal safety cut-out may operate if airflow is restricted. How to make a sound buying decision
- Choose the viewing format. Decide whether you want a long, single linear display, a compact front-facing unit or a corner/bay view, then confirm the model’s published dimensions.
- Set the water plan. Choose a refillable tank if manual filling suits the space, or plan for a water connection where the model requires or supports one.
- Confirm building requirements. Obtain the installation manual for the exact model and market, and verify framing, ventilation, electrical supply, clearances and maintenance access before construction.
- Separate visual and heating needs. Confirm flame-only operation and whether a heater is included or optional; do not infer heating capacity or energy use from the flame-effect description.
- Assess upkeep expectations. Review the model’s water-quality, cleaning, storage and refill instructions, especially if the installation is in a hard-water area or will be left unused.
The available evidence for these examples is manufacturer product information and instructions, not hands-on or independent comparative testing. It does not establish which model has the most realistic flames, lowest operating cost or best energy performance.
