1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most families, the best starting point is a washer with a 7.5–9.5 kg capacity, adjusted for how often you wash, how much laundry you generate, and whether you regularly wash bulky bedding or sports and work gear. Before choosing a model, measure the appliance space and the route into it. Capacity and features matter only if the washer fits your home and suits your routine.
There is no single best washer for every family: guidance and model availability vary by country, and prices, installation requirements, and independent test results are local and change over time. The capacity ranges below come from New Zealand guidance; ENERGY STAR label information applies to the United States.
Choose capacity from laundry habits, not family size alone
Household-size charts are useful starting points, but the amount and type of laundry you wash are just as important. Towels, bedding, sports uniforms, and work clothes can make a larger drum worthwhile; a household that runs frequent small loads may not benefit from paying for extra capacity.
Consumer NZ’s New Zealand buying guide, updated in September 2026, classifies 6–7 kg as medium, 7.5–9.5 kg as large, and 10 kg or more as extra large. It says, “For most households, a large model (7.5–9.5kg) is the best choice.” The guide notes that regular household laundry can include towels or bedding, while 10 kg or more is more compelling for large households or frequent bulky loads. These are Consumer NZ’s categories and recommendations, not universal industry standards. Consumer NZ’s washing machine buying guide reports that its 2026 guide covered more than 30 models from 13 brands.

Manufacturer guidance also differs. Bosch suggests 8–9 kg for homes with three or four people and 10 kg for five or more, while noting that 9 kg can suffice for five. Samsung Canada gives different regional guidance, suggesting 8–10 kg for three or four people and 11 kg or more for five or more. Treat these as brand-specific rules of thumb, not guarantees that a particular capacity will suit your household. Bosch’s washer buying guide and Samsung Canada’s washing-machine buying guide offer their respective recommendations.
When a larger drum is worth considering
- You routinely wash bedding, towels, or other bulky items.
- You have a large household or regularly wash sports and work gear.
- Your usual laundry pattern benefits from fitting a larger load into one cycle.
A larger capacity is not automatically better. Consider its price and whether it will fit your laundry space; Consumer NZ cautions that extra capacity is not worth paying for if you do not need it.

Compare front-load and top-load designs
Front-loaders and top-loaders differ in loading style, cleaning and fabric care, water use, cycle duration, and often upfront cost. Consumer NZ reports that front-loaders usually clean better, are gentler on clothes, and use less water, but tend to cost more initially and take longer per cycle. Those are findings from its guide, not a promise about every model.
Top-loaders include two distinct designs: agitator models use a central spindle, while impeller models use a low-profile mechanism at the base. Consumer NZ notes that many people prefer impeller models for ease of loading and unloading. ENERGY STAR’s U.S. comparison also separates these top-loader types: certified front-loaders use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers, and remain about 25% more efficient in energy and water than top-load impeller washers. These are category comparisons for ENERGY STAR-certified products, not a guarantee for every washer or a substitute for comparing specific models. ENERGY STAR’s washer-efficiency comparison also notes that top-load impellers have become more efficient than traditional top-load agitators in the U.S. context.

- Consider a front-loader if cleaning performance, gentler fabric care, and lower water use are priorities, and you can accommodate its loading position and longer cycles.
- Consider a top-load agitator if you prefer that loading style; compare the exact model’s efficiency and test results rather than assuming all top-loaders perform alike.
- Consider a top-load impeller if you want a top-loader without a central spindle or prefer its loading and unloading style; compare its actual efficiency and performance with other models.
Your preferred loading style, cycle needs, utility costs, layout, and model-level test results should decide the trade-off.
Compare efficiency and likely running costs
In the United States, use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare similar models and estimate annual energy cost. ENERGY STAR defines IMEF as a measure of energy efficiency that accounts for operation, standby, water heating, and drying-related energy; a higher IMEF indicates greater efficiency. IWF measures water consumed per cubic foot of capacity; a lower IWF indicates greater water efficiency. Use the figures to compare washers with similar capacity and configuration, and interpret the estimated cost in light of your local utility rates. ENERGY STAR explains these measures and the EnergyGuide label.

ENERGY STAR says the average American family does about 300 loads of laundry a year; the page does not specify a year for that figure. It also reports that full-sized ENERGY STAR-certified washers use 14 gallons per load compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine, and use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. The page was accessed in 2026 and does not specify a publication year for those comparisons. These are U.S. product-category figures, not guaranteed consumption for an individual model or household.
ENERGY STAR recommends washing full loads when practical, using cold water for many loads, and choosing a high spin speed when appropriate to reduce moisture left in clothes and potentially shorten drying time. Follow garment care labels and the washer’s instructions when deciding whether a setting is suitable.

Pay for features that solve a real laundry problem
Useful features depend on your household and the exact model. Consumer NZ describes auto-dosing as a system that senses detergent needs and dispenses detergent automatically; it considers it potentially useful for saving time and money. Its guide also says out-of-balance correction can help with bulky loads, while expressing skepticism about the value of Wi-Fi control. These are the guide’s judgments, not universal verdicts, and feature names and availability vary by model and market.
- Auto-dosing: worth considering if you want detergent dispensed automatically; check which detergents and settings the model supports.
- Out-of-balance correction: potentially useful if you wash bulky items that can shift during a cycle.
- Wi-Fi controls: consider only if remote monitoring or control fits your routine; connectivity alone is not a reason to pay more.
Measure the space and check installation requirements
A washer’s rated capacity is no help if it cannot be delivered into the room or installed safely. Measure both the final space and the access route, then check the exact local model’s installation manual. ENERGY STAR notes that certified washers come in different widths and capacities, with options including stackable, under-counter, and washer-dryer-combination forms. Whirlpool likewise identifies capacity, size, loading style, and laundry habits as selection factors. ENERGY STAR’s washer guidance and Whirlpool’s washer selection guide provide background on configurations and selection.
- Measure the appliance footprint and required clearances.
- Check door or lid movement, including room to load and unload.
- Measure doorways, hallways, stairs, and turns on the delivery route.
- Confirm whether the model can be stacked or placed under a counter, if needed.
- Verify plumbing, electrical, and any other hookup requirements in the local installation manual.
- For a washer-dryer combination, check the exact unit’s installation requirements, including whether venting is required.
Use a local shortlist before choosing a model
The available guidance does not establish a geography-neutral best model, or a single tested winner for every family. The Consumer NZ guide is New Zealand-focused; ENERGY STAR and EnergyGuide information applies to the United States; manufacturer recommendations can vary by brand and market. For any model you are considering, check current local availability and price alongside independent tests for that exact model, warranty terms, service access, and delivery and installation arrangements.
Quick Recap
- Set a capacity range from household size, weekly laundry volume, and bulky items you wash regularly.
- Choose the loading style and cycle trade-offs that fit your routine.
- Compare efficiency data for similar models, using the local energy label and your utility rates where available.
