There is no evidence-based “best” washer for every second-floor laundry room: vibration depends on the appliance, installation, and the building’s floor, and the available sources do not provide comparable tests across homes. Choose a model that fits the space and household’s loads, compare current efficiency information, and treat quiet-operation features as manufacturer claims—not a promise that the washer will be silent or vibration-free in your home.
How to choose a washer for an upper floor
Start with the room and the household’s typical laundry, not a marketing claim about quietness. ENERGY STAR advises shoppers to consider both placement and size or capacity. A compact washer may fit a closet more easily, but its smaller capacity may mean it is a poor match for a household that regularly washes large loads.
- Measure the installation space: Check the washer’s width, height, depth, door swing, and required clearance. Include room for hoses, connections, and service access.
- Match capacity to typical loads: Consider the size and frequency of the loads you actually wash. A second-floor location alone does not determine the right drum size.
- Compare efficiency on current labels: Use the EnergyGuide label to compare estimated energy use and annual operating cost. ENERGY STAR says a higher Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) indicates greater energy efficiency, while a lower Integrated Water Factor (IWF) indicates lower water use per cubic foot.
- Check the exact model’s installation instructions: Confirm electrical, water, drain, clearance, flooring, and leveling requirements before buying or installing.
ENERGY STAR’s consumer page says certified full-sized washers use 14 gallons per load, compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine, and use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers. It also cites about 300 loads per year for an average American family. These are program-level figures, not a guarantee of a particular household’s savings. ENERGY STAR clothes washer guidance
A compact model to compare—not a proven winner
LG Canada lists the WM1455HWA as a 2.6 cu. ft., 24-inch front-load washer. Its published dimensions are 24 inches wide, 33½ inches high, and 22¼ inches deep; depth with the door open is 43¼ inches. LG describes True Balance anti-vibration and LoDecibel systems and says the model can be installed in a second-floor laundry-room closet. These are manufacturer statements, not independent comparative measurements of noise or vibration in different buildings. What “quiet” and “anti-vibration” claims can—and cannot—tell you
Features intended to balance a washer or reduce operating noise may be useful points of comparison, but they cannot predict how much vibration will reach a particular upstairs room. Floor construction, installation, leveling, and the washer’s operating conditions matter too. The available sources do not establish a universally quietest model, provide controlled second-floor vibration comparisons, or assess the structural suitability of an individual floor.
For efficiency comparisons, use current labels and compare like product types. ENERGY STAR’s criteria page displays residential thresholds as of April 22, 2021: front-load washers over 2.5 cu. ft. at IMEF ≥ 2.76 and IWF ≤ 3.2; top-load washers over 2.5 cu. ft. at IMEF ≥ 2.06 and IWF ≤ 4.3; and residential washers at or below 2.5 cu. ft. at IMEF ≥ 2.07 and IWF ≤ 4.2. Those dated thresholds do not by themselves confirm a particular model’s current certification. Check the current program listing and label for the model you are considering. Correct installation can prevent some vibration and noise problems, but it does not certify that a floor can support a washer or eliminate all transmitted vibration. Follow the instructions for the selected model; the appliance manual takes precedence over general advice.
- Remove shipping bolts where the model uses them. Whirlpool warns that bolts left installed can cause excess vibration and noise. Follow the model’s instructions for removing them.
- Level the washer as directed. Use the model’s installation procedure and check that the unit is stable in its installed position.
- Check the floor guidance. Whirlpool says securing a ¾-inch (19.1 mm) plywood piece beneath the washer and dryer may reduce noise and vibration. This is manufacturer guidance, not a universal remedy or structural certification; do not treat it as a fix for a floor-suitability concern.
- Get qualified advice if the floor is uncertain. The sources do not determine whether a particular floor can handle a specific appliance and load. Consult a qualified installer or building professional if structural suitability is in doubt.
