The cataloged gold-oxide heavy-duty option uses a 135-degree split point and is listed for hard steels, stainless steel, titanium, and other hard materials. No available head-to-head testing establishes one drill as best for every material or setup.
What “short” and “gold oxide” mean
Screw-machine-length drills are also called stub-length drills. ICS Cutting Tools says this shorter form was developed for screw-machine setups where standard-length drills were too long; the reduced length can also help limit breakage and runout. The catalog identifies portable drilling and N/C drilling as applications where a short, rigid drill can be useful. ICS Cutting Tools’ drill catalog
Gold oxide is a specified finish, not a reliable color description. ICS lists heavy-duty gold oxide separately from gold titanium nitride (TiN). It describes gold oxide as an alternative to black oxide and says its film reduces friction between the tool and work without smearing metal. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. ICS Cutting Tools’ catalog

ICS heavy-duty gold-oxide stub drill
The ICS catalog lists a heavy-duty screw-machine drill with a 135-degree split point and gold-oxide finish. It specifies M2/M7 high-speed steel and standard spiral geometry, and lists hard steels, stainless steels, titanium, and other hard materials as applications. Confirm the exact size and dimensions in the catalog or with the seller before ordering. ICS Cutting Tools’ catalog
#1 Best Overall
- CORROSION RESISTANT: Gold oxide coated drill bit promotes longer life
- PRECISE HOLE PLACEMENT: Split Point of the drill bits for wood, metal or plastic provides precise hole placement and clean, burr-free holes
- CONVENIENCE: Metal Carrying Case for compact and durable storage of the drill bits
- Plastic carrying case for compact and durable storage
Precision Twist M42CO cobalt HSS example
A retailer lists the Precision Twist M42CO, letter U, as a screw-machine-length cobalt HSS drill with a 135-degree split point and bronze/gold-oxide finish. The listing names hardened and tempered alloy steel, stainless steel, nodular graphite and malleable cast iron, titanium, nickel, and other hard materials. It also states a drilling depth of up to 2.5 times the drill diameter for this product. Treat these as product-listing claims and check the selected size’s guidance before use. MSC Direct’s M42CO listing
Do not confuse finish with length
A Cle-Line heavy-duty HSS example has a black/gold-oxide finish and a 135-degree split point, but it is jobber length—not stub length. The finish and point alone do not establish that a drill will provide the short reach or rigidity you need. MSC Direct’s Cle-Line listing

- DEWALT 21-pack black oxide twist drill bit set is ideal for general-purpose drilling materials like metal, hardwood, softwood, PVC and fiberglass
- Parabolic flute design increases chip ejection in metal and wood drilling applications
- Black oxide coating helps resist corrosion and increase durability, so your drill bits last longer
- 135° Split-point tips drill on contact and prevents walking on the hard surface you’re working on
- 31° Helix reduces over aggressiveness of true parabolic flute, making it ideal for drilling deep holes
Other coatings are separate choices
Chicago-Latrobe’s catalog describes heavy-duty cobalt HSS families for tough, high-tensile, and work-hardening materials, with straw, TiN, and TiAlN options. It describes TiN as adding lubricity and hardness, and straw as identifying cobalt drills and adding lubricity. These are distinct finish and coating options, not evidence that every option is a gold-oxide stub drill. Chicago-Latrobe catalog
How to choose a gold-oxide short drill
- Confirm the length and reach. Look for “screw-machine” or “stub” length, then check the listed flute length and overall length against the available clearance and required hole depth. A short drill may improve access and rigidity but cannot reach as far as a longer one. ICS Cutting Tools’ catalog
- Match the steel grade to the workpiece. The cataloged gold-oxide option specifies M2/M7 HSS. The cited M42CO listing is cobalt HSS and names demanding alloys and work-hardening materials among its applications. The available documentation does not independently rank one against the other, so use the manufacturer’s guidance for the actual material and operation. ICS Cutting Tools’ catalog MSC Direct’s M42CO listing
- Choose the diameter and respect depth guidance. Match the bit to the required hole size. For the listed M42CO letter-U product, the retailer states a maximum drilling depth up to 2.5 drill diameters; do not generalize that figure to other drills or sizes. MSC Direct’s M42CO listing
- Check the point geometry. Both documented gold-oxide heavy-duty examples use a 135-degree split point. The cited sources do not provide comparative tests against other point angles across different materials, so confirm the tool’s application guidance rather than assuming one geometry is best for every job. ICS Cutting Tools’ catalog MSC Direct’s M42CO listing
- Verify the finish by specification. Confirm that the product description says gold oxide or bronze/gold oxide; do not infer it from a gold appearance, which could indicate TiN or another finish. ICS Cutting Tools’ catalog
- Check fit and availability with the seller. Confirm the exact size, shank, rotation, flute length, overall length, and current stock for the selected product. Catalog and retailer examples do not establish that every size is available. MSC Direct’s M42CO listing MSC Direct’s Cle-Line listing
What the available evidence can establish
Catalogs and product listings identify relevant drill types, stated materials, geometry, and finishes, but they are not controlled cross-brand performance tests. They do not establish a universal winner across materials, diameters, machines, speeds, feeds, or coolant conditions, nor do they support an independent lifespan comparison. Treat manufacturer performance and application statements as product guidance, not as independently measured results.
