The best shower base is the one that fits the finished shower space, matches the drain and plumbing, and suits the way the shower will be built and maintained. Confirm those constraints first; then compare materials, entry style, support requirements, and product-specific installation instructions. There is no universal best material for every bathroom.
Start with the shower’s dimensions and drain
Before comparing finishes, measure the existing base footprint between finished wall surfaces. Compare those measurements with the manufacturer’s published dimensions for the exact model, and confirm that the base suits the shower layout—such as an alcove or corner installation.

Lowe’s identifies 30 by 60 inches and 32 by 60 inches as common shower-base sizes in its buying guide, updated January 30, 2024. Those examples do not establish that either size will fit a particular bathroom. Measure the actual space and check the product specifications. Lowe’s shower-base buying guide
Record the drain’s position—centered, left, right, or another offset—and check that the base’s drain opening can connect to the existing plumbing. A drain included with a base is not automatically compatible with every installation. Also check threshold height, intended enclosure, framing, and how the base will meet the finished wall surface.

Choose a base configuration that suits the project
Shower bases are not all installed or finished in the same way. Kohler groups them as recessed, raised, or tile-ready; each has different implications for floor work, water containment, and finishing. Kohler’s shower-base buying guide
Recessed bases
A recessed base is set flush with the adjacent bathroom floor. Achieving that transition may require more extensive floor work to provide the necessary depth, so assess the existing floor and framing before choosing this configuration.

- Ready-to-use waterproofing membrane
- For tile showers or other concealed waterproofing applications
- Marked in 6 in. increments for easy measuring/trimming
- Made of durable, abrasion-resistant 40 mil thick flexible PVC for long-lasting use
- 6 ft. x 50 ft. roll
Raised bases
A raised base sits above the bathroom floor and uses a threshold to contain water. Check the threshold height against the shower entry and the enclosure design.
Tile-ready bases and site-built tiled showers
A tile-ready base is part of a system intended to receive tile, not simply a finished pan to which tile can be added without further planning. Waterproofing, drain connection, tray, and entry transition need to work together. Schluter, for example, describes prefabricated trays with centered and off-center drain variants and a separate ramp for barrier-free applications. Schluter KERDI-SHOWER-T/-TS system information

- Ready-to-use waterproofing membrane
- For tile showers or other concealed waterproofing applications
- Marked in 6 in. increments for easy measuring/trimming
- Made of durable, abrasion-resistant 40 mil thick flexible PVC for long-lasting use
- Ready to use on tile shower installations up to 5 ft. x 9 ft
A custom tiled shower involves a sloped receptor, waterproofing, and a watertight drain connection. It is a coordinated installation system rather than a tray-only purchase. Confirm that the selected components are compatible and that the installer is experienced with the system.

| Option | What the source supports | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic | Lowe’s describes acrylic as moderately priced and easy to install and maintain. It is also listed as a common purchasable base material. | Construction, required support, surface texture, care instructions, and warranty for the exact model. |
| Fiberglass | Listed as a shower-base material in Lowe’s buying guide. | Product-specific finish and care requirements; the cited guide does not establish a general durability ranking. |
| Solid surface | Lowe’s describes solid-surface bases as durable and virtually maintenance-free. | Weight, support, surface care, and price for the specific product. |
| Tile-ready or tiled | Allows a tiled finish but requires attention to waterproofing and drain integration. | System compatibility, installation details, and installer experience. |
| Stone or other specialty materials | Identified as available material categories in Kohler’s guide. | Product-specific care, weight, slip characteristics, and installation information. |

Best Value
- Waterproof PVC shower pan liner protects subfloors from costly water damage
- 40-mil thickness; ideal for tile showers and other concealed waterproofing applications
- Lines every 6 inches facilitate accurate measuring and cutting
- No underlay mount required; may be glued directly to the drain for a positive seal
- Meets ASTM D-4551; meets FHA & HUD requirements for shower pan
For a site-built shower receptor, slope, waterproofing, and the connection to the drain are essential parts of the installation. A MAPEI installation document reproduces 2012 International Residential Code language calling for a receptor floor slope of at least 1/4 inch per foot and no more than 1/2 inch per foot (2% to 4%) toward the drain. That is dated code language reproduced in a product document, not a determination of current requirements for a particular location. Confirm the locally adopted code and follow current manufacturer instructions. MAPEI installation document
Do not treat a tile-ready tray, waterproofing layer, drain, or barrier-free ramp as interchangeable parts unless the relevant manufacturers specify that they are compatible. Choose the transition and drainage components alongside the base.
Compare the full project, not just the base
A fair comparison accounts for the complete installation. A lower base price may not represent the lower-cost project if the chosen configuration requires plumbing changes, additional compatible components, or more floor and waterproofing work. Current prices are not established by the cited sources, so obtain current quotes for the specific products and installation.
Quick Recap
- Fit: finished dimensions, shape, and shower layout.
- Drain: opening and position matched to the base and plumbing.
