For a documented mix of speed and grade features, the NordicTrack Commercial 2450 lists a 14 MPH top speed and a range from 12% incline to -3% decline. For steep climbing, the NordicTrack X24 guide lists a much wider -6% to 40% range. Those are manufacturer specifications, not proof of tested superiority or a substitute for running outdoors on varied terrain.
What cross-country runners should look for in a treadmill
Indoor running can make hill repeats and speed sessions more controlled: you can set a grade or pace and repeat it. A treadmill is still a consistent belt surface, not a reproduction of the footing, turns, weather, or changing terrain encountered in cross-country racing. Treat it as one training tool alongside outdoor running rather than assuming a steep incline alone simulates a course.
- Grade range: Check both the maximum incline and whether decline is included. A decline feature should not be assumed from an incline specification.
- Useful speed: Match the top speed to your planned intervals. A high maximum is not valuable if the deck, stability, fit, or cost makes the machine unsuitable.
- Running surface: Belt length and width affect comfort and stride clearance. Fit&Well suggests a 22-inch width for running and around a 60-inch belt for runners over six feet; these are buying-guide suggestions, not universal standards. Compare them with your own stride and try the deck if possible.
- Home fit: Check unfolded and folded dimensions, machine weight, room layout, delivery access, and any residential power requirements. Commercial specifications alone do not establish that a machine is practical at home.
- Ongoing terms: Check subscription requirements, what functions work without membership, warranty coverage, and maintenance before purchasing.
Fit&Well’s general buying guide also recommends considering belt dimensions, speed, incline and decline, available space, and subscription costs: Fit&Well’s treadmill buying guide.

How to choose the right grade and speed
If your priority is repeatable hill intervals
Choose an incline range that covers the grades you plan to train on, not simply the largest number in a product listing. A steep-incline model may suit dedicated climbing sessions, but steepness does not reproduce the variable footing or changing course conditions of cross-country. If you also want downhill work, confirm that decline is built in or included in the configuration you are purchasing.
If your priority is speed sessions
Use the top-speed figure as a ceiling, then ask whether the machine’s deck, stability, and usable speed range fit your intervals. The examples here list maximum speeds from 14 to 17 MPH (and 0.3–15 MPH for the BODYCRAFT T1200); these vendor figures do not determine which speed a particular runner needs. Select for your planned workouts and comfortable running position rather than buying on the maximum alone.

If both matter
Compare grade range, speed, deck dimensions, and intended use together. The Commercial 2450 is a home-running example with listed incline and decline as well as a 14 MPH maximum. The TRUE Apex offers higher listed speed and a wider grade span, but it is described as a commercial machine. Neither specification set, by itself, establishes the better choice for a home or a cross-country runner.
Check subscriptions and automatic workout controls
Some connected features can affect the real cost and day-to-day use. NordicTrack says certain automatic trainer-linked speed and grade adjustments require an iFIT Pro Membership; the exact plan, included trial, and functions available without membership should be checked for the specific model and current terms. The Commercial 1750 product page describes membership-dependent automatic workout adjustments and deck and folding features, but that information should not be assumed to establish the terms for every NordicTrack model.

Home treadmill or commercial machine?
The TRUE Apex and BODYCRAFT T1200 have published commercial specifications. That information can help compare speed and running-surface dimensions, but it does not establish that either is a sensible residential purchase. Before considering a commercial model for home use, confirm that its size, weight, electrical requirements, delivery route, and service arrangements work in your space. Also confirm exactly which accessories or options—such as the T1200’s decline kit—are included in the quote.
What the listed specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer pages document useful product features, but the specifications in this comparison do not show that a treadmill improves race outcomes or reproduces outdoor cross-country conditions. No head-to-head test for cross-country runners is established here. Use the listed ranges to narrow the field, then assess fit, home requirements, cost, and training needs before choosing.
