If you’re looking for the best top-load washer without an agitator, look for an impeller model: it uses a low-profile cone or disc instead of a fixed center post. Two current Whirlpool examples illustrate the choice: the WTW6150PB is listed as a 5.3-cu.-ft. impeller washer, while the WTW6157PW has a removable agitator and can be used with its impeller when the post is removed. Neither is established as a universal cleaning or reliability winner; the right fit depends on your space, laundry loads, preferred features and efficiency priorities.
What “without an agitator” means
In everyday shopping language, a top-load washer “without an agitator” usually means an impeller washer. Instead of a tall, fixed center post, an impeller machine has a low-profile cone or disc at the bottom of the tub. ENERGY STAR describes top-load impellers as a more energy- and water-efficient option than traditional top-load washers. ENERGY STAR’s clothes washer guidance
There are two configurations to distinguish: an impeller-only machine and a washer supplied with a removable agitator that can also be used with the impeller. If you want the open-tub design all the time, check that the specific model does not require a post to be installed.
Two Whirlpool options to compare
| Model | Configuration | Published capacity | What the distinction means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool WTW6150PB | Impeller | 5.3 cu. ft., per Whirlpool’s comparison chart and 2025 lineup guide | A direct-fit choice for shoppers seeking an impeller washer without a removable-post configuration listed in the cited materials. Whirlpool comparison chart; Whirlpool 2025 lineup guide |
| Whirlpool WTW6157PW | Removable agitator; impeller option when the post is removed | 5.2–5.3 cu. ft., per Whirlpool’s product page | Offers a choice between using the removable post and having the impeller configuration. Whirlpool WTW6157PW product page |

How impeller washing works—and what that does not prove
With an impeller’s low-profile wash plate rather than a central post, the machine moves the load through the wash action. LG describes its own top-load impeller mechanism this way: “Each LG Top Load Impeller washer uses a high efficiency impeller that rotates so clothes rub against each other to break down stains.” LG’s top-load washer information
That is a manufacturer description of how its washers work, not independent evidence that a particular impeller model cleans better, treats fabric more gently or outperforms a particular agitator washer. For those comparisons, look for testing of the exact models you are considering.

Compare efficiency with the exact model in mind
ENERGY STAR’s general guidance says full-sized ENERGY STAR certified washers use 14 gallons per load compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. It also reports that certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers, and front-load washers use about 25% less energy and water than top-load impeller washers. These are program-level comparisons, not measurements or guarantees for every model, household or wash cycle. ENERGY STAR clothes washer guidance
If reducing resource use is your main goal, compare front-loaders as well as top-load impellers. Before buying, check ENERGY STAR status for the exact model and consult its current EnergyGuide; a general category comparison cannot substitute for a model-specific estimate.

What to check before you buy
- Capacity and typical loads: Match the stated tub capacity to the amount and type of laundry your household usually washes. A larger capacity is useful only if it suits your actual loads.
- Space and access: Verify the washer’s full width, depth and height, plus lid clearance, doorway access and the route into the laundry area. A comparison chart’s width filter is not a substitute for the complete installation dimensions.
- Fixed versus removable post: Decide whether you want an impeller-only machine or the option to install a removable agitator. Confirm what comes with the exact model and how its configuration works.
- Controls and cycles: Compare control type and available cycles against the way you do laundry. Whirlpool’s comparison chart distinguishes models by capacity, width, smart features, control type and washer configuration.
- Water-level or deeper-fill options: If you prefer more water for certain loads, check whether the exact washer offers a suitable setting and understand its operating instructions.
- Care and installation: Read the model’s care instructions and confirm local delivery, installation and haul-away terms with the retailer. Availability and service terms vary by location.
Care instructions for the WTW6157PW
