The best small ice maker is the one that fits your counter, makes the kind of ice you want, and suits how often you can refill it and manage the finished ice. A compact bullet machine may be shallower and easier to place; a nugget machine offers a different ice texture but can take up more depth. Compare the full footprint, basket capacity, reservoir, cleaning requirements, and ice style—not just the advertised pounds per day.
Start with the ice style and the space you have
Countertop ice makers commonly produce bullet or nugget ice. They are not interchangeable formats: choose the texture you prefer before comparing convenience features or output claims. The Midea MERI26B0AWW is a bullet-ice example with two size options; the GE Profile Opal Mini makes nugget ice. These are manufacturer-described product types, not independently tested recommendations.
Measure the appliance’s width, depth, and height against the usable counter area and the cabinet opening above it. Leave room to open the lid or reach a top-fill opening, ventilate the appliance, route its cord, access any drain, and clean around it. A machine that is narrow may still project far into the counter.

Compare production with ready-to-use storage
A daily production figure is not the amount of ice the machine can hold frozen in its basket. Midea lists up to 26.5 pounds per day but a one-pound storage capacity; those numbers answer different questions. GE lists up to 36 pounds per day for the Opal Mini, but that figure should not be read as basket capacity. Check basket capacity, reservoir size, and how often you expect to use or collect ice before prioritizing a large daily-output claim. Costco’s countertop ice-maker guidance likewise points shoppers to basket and reservoir capacity and batch timing.
Actual output in a household can vary with operating conditions and routine. Treat manufacturer output claims as specifications, not as a promise that a particular amount will be ready at a particular time. For a space-constrained home, a manageable footprint and enough ice on hand for your routine may matter more than the largest daily figure.

Plan for refilling, meltwater, and storage
These examples use reservoirs rather than requiring a dedicated water line: Midea lists a 1.3-liter water tank, while GE says the Opal Mini has a built-in reservoir and requires no water line. Check the exact model before buying, especially if you want fewer manual refills or are considering a variant with an accessory tank.
A countertop ice basket is not a freezer compartment. Ice can melt while it waits, and the machine may handle meltwater differently from a freezer. Check the manual for drainage and water-return instructions. If you want to keep surplus ice longer, transfer it to a freezer-safe container when the manufacturer’s instructions allow; do not assume ice will stay frozen in the basket.

Which example fits which counter?
Consider the Midea if shallow depth is the constraint
At 8.4 inches deep and 11.6 inches wide, the Midea example has a smaller listed depth than the Opal Mini. It makes bullet ice, lists two sizes, and has a one-pound storage capacity. That combination may suit someone who wants a compact bullet machine and can work with a smaller basket; verify fill, lid, ventilation, and cleaning access in the intended spot.
Consider the Opal Mini if nugget ice is the priority
The GE example is listed at 8.6 inches wide but 15.6 inches deep, so its narrow width should not obscure its deeper footprint. GE says it needs no water line and has a built-in reservoir; select models have a side tank. GE’s support guidance says the Mini produces its first batch in about five minutes. Consider the depth and the nugget format together when deciding whether it suits the counter and routine.
