What counts as a shower sponge?
The name covers several different tools. A natural loofah is dried gourd fiber—not a sea sponge. The familiar synthetic bath pouf is made from plastic mesh, commonly nylon. Silicone scrubbers, natural sea sponges, and ordinary washcloths are other options.
Because these materials differ in texture and care needs, choose by how you want to wash and exfoliate rather than by the word “natural” or a broad hygiene claim.

How to care for a loofah
A loofah’s porous texture can catch shed skin cells. If it stays damp in a wet shower, it may not dry fully between uses. Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Melissa Piliang, MD, warns of the risk in that setting: “They don’t ever totally dry out, so the loofah is a beautiful breeding ground for bacteria.” Her comment describes loofahs left in a wet shower environment, not every loofah under every care routine.
