For an LG washing machine, choose a detergent labeled high-efficiency (HE), then follow the detergent package’s dosing directions and your washer manual’s dispenser instructions. LG’s guidance supports HE detergent, but it does not identify one brand as best or establish comparative cleaning results. The right choice depends on compatibility, format, and correct use.
What detergent should you use in an LG washer?
Use HE detergent. LG says to use high-efficiency detergent with its washing machines in its detergent and additive guidance. That is a compatibility recommendation—not a brand ranking or a claim that one detergent cleans better than another.
When choosing among HE detergents, check that the format works with your washer and that you can follow its dosing and dispenser instructions. Fragrance and other personal preferences can also guide your choice, but the LG guidance cited here does not compare ingredients, stain removal, or value between brands.
How much detergent should you use?
Follow the dosage instructions on the detergent package. Avoid adding extra detergent in the hope of improving cleaning: LG warns that too much can create excess suds and contribute to poor rinsing, residue, buildup, or leaks. Its residue troubleshooting guidance and front-load leak guidance both point to correct detergent use as part of prevention.

What type of detergent are you using: liquid, powder, or pods?
Liquid detergent
On applicable LG front-load models, put liquid detergent in the liquid detergent cup in the dispenser and keep it below the Max line. Overfilling can cause the detergent to dispense too early. Cup design and compatibility can vary, so check the instructions for your exact model; LG explains the cup setup in its front-load liquid detergent cup guide.
Powder detergent
If your front-load dispenser has a removable liquid detergent cup, remove it before adding powder to the main-wash compartment. LG warns that powder placed in a liquid cup may not dispense correctly and could clog the inlet. Follow your washer manual if its dispenser arrangement differs.

Detergent pods
Place a pod in the drum before loading laundry; do not put it in the dispenser drawer. LG’s general usage guidance says to use no more than one pod per load. Follow the pod maker’s instructions as well.
Do top-load and front-load LG washers use detergent differently?
The HE recommendation and the need to dose correctly apply across LG washer guidance, but detergent placement can depend on washer type and model. Do not assume that a dispenser setup shown for a front-load washer applies to a top-load model. LG’s top-load detergent and additive instructions describe model-dependent use. Check the manual for your washer’s exact dispenser and detergent directions.

What if detergent residue or rinsing problems continue?
Excess detergent is one possible cause of residue, but LG also lists hardened or clumped detergent, cold water, and bulky items as factors. Check that the detergent is not clumped, review the package dose, and consult your model’s manual for its cleaning and dispenser instructions. If the problem persists, use LG’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming a different brand will solve it.
